Venezuela loses a recently acquired Chinese K-8 plane in a weird crash

Published: Wednesday, July 21, 2010

VHeadline News Editor Patrick J. O'Donoghue reports: Venezuela has lost one of its recently acquired Chinese K-8 training planes during a routine training flight.

This morning (Wednesday) a trainer plane crashed along the Turbio valley highway that links eastern and western Barquisimeto (Lara State).

The Venezuelan Air Force pilot and co-pilot were able to use their ejector seats and parachute to safety.

Details have been sketchy about the exact location of the crash only to point out it happened on the Riberena highway 48 St. Since the road is usually flowing with traffic, the plane probably landed in the river basin or adjoining fields.

According to unofficial sources, the plane hit high tension cables, causing it to lose control and crash. No victims have been reported.

The K-8s use the area near the airport for practice maneuvers and dog fights.

FAVB General Jose Duque told El Impulso newspaper that the accident happened after one of the motor's failed.

Engine failure blamed for plane crash in Venezuela

The military plane crash in Venezuela's western Lara state has been caused by engine failure, air force commander Maj. Gen. Jorge Arevalo Oropeza said Wednesday.

According to Arevalo, the K-8 plane crashed during a training flight early Wednesday due to the failure in one of its engines. However, the pilot and co-pilot of the plane ejected safely before the crash.

The accident occurred at 9:45 am (1415 GMT) on Wednesday on the outskirts of Barquisimeto, capital of the Lara state.

"Those are machines, and the machines have failures," Arevalo told state-run TV channel Venezolana de Television.

One pilot fractured his hip and the other survived unhurt, the air force commander said, adding that a panel would be set up to investigate the crash.

Apparently Venezuela is newest operator of K-8 Karakorum. The country received its first six K-8 aircraft in March 2010.

Confirmed order for a total of eighteen K-8 aircraft was placed by Venezuela in 2008, according to info available on the web.

Here's a photo of K-8 Karakorum in markings of Venezuelan Air Force.
