PIA ATR 42-500 (AP-BHO) Slips off at Lahore Airport

As per Geo News updates, aircraft operating PK 688 MUX-LHE skidded off the runway at LHE. No injuries have been reported, though the onward LHE_ISB to be operated by the same aircraft under same call sign has been delayed.

As the flight number suggests the plane to be an ATR42. Wonder what would have been the cause and what is the level of damage?

As oer Geo TV, nose and one main landing gear is damaged.

Nose gear and landing gears have been totally collapsed.
Aircraft is resting on it's belly.

BHO landed on runway 36R and for (as yet) unknown reasons skidded off the runway, to the left, and onto 36L, damaging her left main and nose gear in the process. All pax and crew were fine, and aircraft damage is minimal, however extent will be verified later as the aircraft slid in the dirt on its belly for a distance.

PIA aircraft skids at Lahore airport

LAHORE: A Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) aircraft coming from Multan skidded at the Lahore airport during landing on Saturday, creating panic among the passengers, a private TV channel reported. According to the channel, the flight, PK-688, came off the runway after skidding and struck into the earth next to it. However, all the passengers remained safe and no one was hurt. The channel quoted PIA officials as saying the same flight was to leave for Islamabad after a stopover at the Lahore airport. PIA plane skids off runway

LAHORE, May 30: A passenger plane skidded off while landing at the Lahore runaway on Saturday.
A PIA plane (PK-688) coming from Multan skidded when it landed at the runaway. Forty people, including crew, were aboard.

The rescue teams of the Civil Aviation Authority rescued them. None of them was injured. A CAA official said faulty landing gears resulted in the incident.

PIA flight makes emergency landing

LAHORE - A PIA flight PK-688 made emergency landing at the Allama Iqbal International Airport (AIIAP) on Saturday evening with 40 passengers on board including crewmembers. Seven passengers got minor injuries during the emergency landing.
According to a spokesman of Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), the injured persons were administered first aid by the CAA officials at the medical room.
Providing the detailed information, he said while landing at the AIIAP at 7:30 pm, the landing gear of an ATR plane, flight number PK-688, went out of order, due to which the pilot lost control over the plane and it slid down the runway, finally stopping in the adjacent muddy land. However, no loss of life or serious injury was reported, he added.
After the incident, the rescue staff of CAA, fire brigade and other teams rushed to the spot to meet any crisis, but the situation remained under controlled, said the CAA official.
According to an aviation officer, the PIA fleet includes seven ATR planes out of which four planes are based in Islamabad while remaining are at Karachi. The affected plane is from the federal capital.
Sources in the airline have also revealed that certain spare parts of the ATR are not available in Pakistan. On the other hand, PIA has formed an investigation team to find out the causes of the accident and action would be taken against the responsible.

PIA Aircraft Escapes Crash Landing

LAHORE: Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) flight PK-688 skidded off the runway onto the unpaved ground with chunks flying off the aircraft, as the pilot landed the aircraft with the wind at its tail, contrary to the usual practice of landing into the headwind.

Reaching Allama Iqbal International Airport at 7:55PM, the aircraft lost control during landing, and the rear fin was seriously damaged, skidding off the aircraft for about two kilometers.

The horrifically sliding aircraft spun over a five feet deep drain entrenchment which could easily have caused devastating results. The front wheel, the side wheel and the landing gear of the aircraft were destroyed. The accident was so dreadful that all those watching and the 43 passengers onboard the flight term it a miracle that they are still alive.

Sources at the control tower revealed that flight PK-688, coming from Multan to Lahore on its arrival at the Lahore Airport, faced a comparatively stronger than usual wind. The Air Traffic Control (ATC) informed the on-duty pilot of the wind situation and direction suggesting to land into the headwind, but the final decision rested with the pilot. It is a regular practice that ATC gives complete demographics of the weather and ground situation to the landing pilot who decides the direction to land the aircraft as he is the best judge of the aircraftÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â€šÂ¬Ã¢â€žÂ¢s capabilities and maneuverability. Mostly, pilots land the aircraft against the wind direction, as it ensures a better control. The pilot of flight PK-688, however, opted to land the aircraft with the wind at the aircraftÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â€šÂ¬Ã¢â€žÂ¢s tail. Landing with the wind at the aircraftÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â€šÂ¬Ã¢â€žÂ¢s tail is a very tricky option as the speed of the wind and its force has every chance of limiting control over the aircraft as the windÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â€šÂ¬Ã¢â€žÂ¢s push interferes with the maneuvering of the aircraft.

Although an investigation will reveal the complete picture, the decision of anomalous landing contributed to the unfortunate event. The aircraft was an ATR and is smaller among the safest aircraft in PIAÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â€šÂ¬Ã¢â€žÂ¢s fleet. PIA has assured to conduct thorough investigation into the matter.

All tries to contact Pakistan Air Line PilotsÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â€šÂ¬Ã¢â€žÂ¢ Association (PALPA) administration failed because their mobile phones were switched off.

2 Different reasons , media has started guessing itself.
How can they say about the faulty landing gear ? Any source ?
