Dera Ismail Khan Airport To Re-open On October 27
DERA ISMAIL KHAN, April 24: The government has decided to reopen the Dera Ismail Khan Airport after about six years of its closure.
The airport had been closed for flights for unspecified reasons after the American attack on Afghanistan in 2001.
This was stated by Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly Faisal Karim Kundi while talking to a delegation from Dera Ismail Khan in Islamabad, sources told Dawn here on Thursday.
A letter sent by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) to the deputy speaker on April 7 said that the airport would be made operational in two months, the sources added.
The reopening is stated to cost around Rs4 million, in cluding Rs2.5 million on the repair of the runway and Rs1.1 million on the renovation and repair of the terminal building.
The Dera Ismail Khan airport is the only airport, beside the Bannu airport, which used to connect the southern districts of the NWFP with other parts of the country.
The Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) used to operate Fokker flights from the airport to Peshawar, Zhob, Multan, Lahore and Islamabad.

ISLAMABAD, Aug 16 (APP): Deputy Speaker National Assembly Faisal Karim Kundi Saturday said the government has chalked out a comprehensive plan and allocated substantial amount in the fiscal year 2008-09 to provide the people better transportation facility.
Talking to Managing Director PIA Captain Muhammad Aijaz Haroon, the deputy speaker said that better means of transportation and communication play a vital role in the progress and economic development of the country.
