PIA & Oman Air To Start New Flights From Sialkot Airport

Post by Abbas Ali »

SIALKOT, Oct 18: The Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) is starting direct passenger flights from Sialkot to Abu Dhabi, Doha and Muscat from Oct 26. The Oman Air is also starting its direct flight from Muscat to Sialkot on the same day.

Dr. Sarfraz Bashir, who is senior vice-chairman of the Sialkot International Airport Limited (SIAL), disclosed this while talking to reporters here on Saturday.

He said that a launching ceremony of these flights jointly organized by SIAL, PIA and Oman Air would be held at the airport on Oct 26 and all arrangements in this connection had been finalised.

Dr. Bashir said that the SIAL management in collaboration with Chinese and Japanese business communities had also decided to establish new industries in airport’s vicinity.

He said that the federal government had approved a special grant of Rs180 million from Export Development Fund to set up a cargo terminal at the airport and its construction would start soon.

Still using 737's though. I would have expected A310 service to Abu Dhabi or Doha.

Its good to see Sialkot being connected to Islamabad but i doubt it there'll be much traffic between Islamabad and Sialkot.
Still no word about PIA Cargo from Sialkot. :(

That's good to see another destination for SIAL! It deserves it! Oman is a very popular place in connecting it through Abu Dhabi is a wise decision. Does PIA have rights to pick up passengers there?

I think since the Government of Sialkot is thinking of starting its own airline, maybe PIA can sell its remaining Boeing 737 fleet to them and buy either A320 or B737 Nxt Gen to replace them. It would be a good use of resources I think.

To operate flights from Sialkot PIA has to position aircraft there. That's why flight PK-0229 originates from Islamabad and has a stopover at Sialkot to pick more Muscat-bound passengers. Flight PK-0229 will get good pax load by picking Muscat bound passengers both from Islamabad and Sialkot.

Similarly, flight PK-0230 from Muscat will pick passengers travelling to Sialkot and Islamabad and at the end of flight the aircraft will be positioned back to Islamabad Airport.

PIA All Set To Start Flights From Sialkot Airport

Friday, October 24, 2008

SIALKOT:
National flag carrier Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has finalised all arrangements for commencing twice-weekly international flights from the Sialkot International Airport.

PIA’s District Sales Manager Khalid Hameed, talking to APP here on Thursday, said that PK-253 will take off for Abu Dhabi at 11.30 am from the Sialkot airport on October 26, and will return at 7.10 pm.

Direct flight on the Sialkot-Muscat section will commence on October 29, he said, adding that Abu Dhabi and Muscat-bound flights are fully booked which is a healthy omen for the national carrier as well as trade and commerce.

A large number of overseas Pakistanis and members of the business community from Gujranwala, Gujarat, Narowal, Jehlum and other adjoining areas as well as Mirpur, Azad Kashmir will benefit from the new service, he added. PIA is already operating flights on Sialkot-Kuwait and Sialkot-Karachi routes.
