Appointment of new MD

Post by Maddad »

Rumour has it that the appointment of a new MD for PIA is to be effected tonight or tomorrow.
Aspirants are already Qing up in Islamabad.
Hope they pick up a competent person this time.
PIA deserves a better choice after so many disasterous choices.

I think current MD is the best suitable person for this airline unless and until someone is imported with more, reliable and relevant experience. Chances are that this new government will only appoint one of their friends who may be absolutely incompetent, as it has always has been the case!!!

NEW MD

Post by F.K »

word has it capt aijaz haroon is taking charge of PIA in the coming few days. from what i ve heard hes a good administrator and doesnt bow to pressure. was removed as director airport services when he refused to entertain the sifarish of a nephew of the then PM JAMALI for a foreign posting, something umar ghafoor gladly did when he was made to replace him. therein lies the difference.

There should be a competent person who can run the airline and in this case Pia which is going in loses. I would Prefer Capt Imran Aziz he is also a competent person but as Airbourne has said is very much correct that Ejaz Haroon is a very close friend of Mr ASIF ZARDARI and imran aziz is not so close as ejaz haroon is so lets see what happens. If i was to decide that who would be the Md i would prefer EJAZ HAROON

Instead of getting chumchas and chelas, how about PK getting people outside of their little circle and get some people capable like EK, EY, etc. have.

God forbid that happens.

I think the former MD's brash decision making, and poor understanding of the people working in PIA is what cost him. It is rumored that he was also appointed through a high power recommendation to MoD.

Anyways, he was from the PIA faternity but was in the investment department and knew nothing about operations, engineering and sales.

Current problems in PIA are sales and marketing problems rather than fuel consumption etc. After all, all other airlines are flying...

I think it was a good political move since the labor unions were restored, it was the Flight engineers game now, and any decision going in the FEs favor would ultimately cripple and compromise the airline. It would now be important to resolve the FE problem by restoring them and the B747s.

Unfortunately Zafar A. Khan as Chairman was not given enough time to show results and now Aslam R. Khan as Managing Director also not given enough time to prove himself. Aslam R. Khan with vast experience in airline management looked well qualified to lead PIA. Just three months' time given to Aslam R. Khan is not enough. He should have been given long time, allowed to work independently at least for two years to show positive results and improvement in PIA.

With changes in top management taking place after a gap of every few months an airline cannot move forward in one direction.

PIA problems are huge. As long as PIA's overstaffed with 5000-6000 extra employees and there are political appointments in the airline without merit, unwanted interference from politcal forces, incompetent people on top management level positions, poor sales, marketing & route planning, corruption, mismanagement and nepotism, PIA will continue to suffer and make losses. Also to reduce fuel bills, PIA will have to say good bye to its ageing Boeing 747s. With skyrocketing oil & fuel prices, it's time to operate twin-engine fuel efficient aircraft with low maintenance cost for successful and profitable airline business.

^ Well said Abbas; but I guess the so-called democratic government will hardly pay any heed to this; instead of kicking political & incompetent people out of the airline, they have just begun to inject more into it.

From Muhammad Saleh Zaafir

Aslam R. Khan who had served PIA in various capacities was appointed Managing Director three months back. The new MD is the captain of the most modern wide-bodied plane Boeing 777.

ISLAMABAD, May 6:
The government on Tuesday appointed Defence Minister Chaudhry Ahmed Mukhtar as chairman of Pakistan International Airlines and Capt Ijaz Haroon as its managing director.

Mr Mukhtar replaces Defence Secretary Kamran Rasool and Capt Haroon succeeds Aslam R. Khan.

The outgoing PIA executives were appointed by the caretaker government on February 28 and the appointments were criticised by the Pakistan People’s Party.

Capt Haroon, one of the senior most Boeing 777 pilots, has been associated with the airline for 30 years. This is the first time in the airline’s history that a pilot has been appointed as its managing director.

Capt Haroon has previously held various management positions, including director airport services and general manager central control.
