PIA Flight PK-234 Passengers Walk on Apron at Islamabad Airport Due to Unavailability of Apron Bus

Passengers forced to walk due to lack of airport shuttle

7/2/2018

RAWALPINDI:
Passengers on Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) flight PK-234 from Dubai had to walk to the Islamabad International Airport`s (IIA) international arrivals lounge on Sunday due to the lack of an available airport apron bus.

Airport shuttles are typically used to move passengers between terminals and to and from aircraft parked in the bays, as jet bridges have also been installed at the new airport.

But sources said passengers on PK-234 had to wait in their seats for nearly half an hour after landing for an airport shuttle that would take them to the international arrivals lounge.

The flight landed at9:40a.m and was parked on Bay12. Passengers remained in the aircraft for more than 25 minutes, after an already delayed start to their journey in Dubai, as they waited for an airport shuttle.

When they saw that there was no bus available, the passengers made their way to international arrivals on foot, carrying their hand luggage and in some cases, children.

Upon reaching international arrivals, the passengers protested against PIA management for failing to provide them with a bus.

PIA spokesperson Mashood Tajwar told Dawn that PK-234 had not parked at a jet bridge because the plane had to fly to Karachi.

He said the issue arose because of typically heavy domestic and international flight schedules on Sunday.

Mr Tajwar said one bus was sent to the plane to transport some passengers from the plane to the lounge, but others faced problems because of the unavailability of a bus driver, who was to finish his duty at 10a.m.

He said some of the passengers who could not be transported by bus expressed resentment when they reached the lounge.

On July 1, PIA Airbus A320 registration AP-BLC landed at 9:39 AM at Islamabad International Airport as international flight PK-234 from Dubai. The flight's scheduled arrival time was 9:25 AM.

Later, AP-BLC departed from Islamabad at 11:38 AM as domestic flight PK-301 to Karachi. Flight's scheduled departure time was 10:00 AM.

Can someone tell me why there are only 15 jet bridges at the new airport? yet they plan to move 20million+ passengers annually - especially as the design allowed for expansion in all 3 directions, why was it necessary to leave space on both sides as remote bays. Yet there was so much land available for remote bays away from the main terminal anyway.

I can feel for the passengers having to walk, especially elderly or those with children in this hot weather. On top of that just arriving from a top class Dubai airport.

My parents travelled on ISB-LHR for the first time on Saturday. Having travelled around the world airports, they rate the building comparable to Dubai or Doha but the management is seriously below standard. And if they are not careful the airport will loose its image very quickly.
