In 1980s and 1990s, PIA operated flights that connected Muzaffarabad with Rawalakot and Islamabad.

PIA used 18-seater de Havilland Canada DHC-6 Twin Otter 300 aircraft capable of performing Short Take-Off and Landing (STOL) from Muzaffarabad Airport's 2,960 feet long runway.

very beautiful airport, Abbas thanks for sharing pics, i would love to travel there if PIA resumes its service, but can it handle an ATR 42?

Also I am suprised at the runway ID 13/31, it is same for Quetta/Simungli as well as for small military airfield (kachh) to the northeast of Quetta.

Not sure about possibility of ATR 42-500 operations at Muzaffarabad. I guess current runway length will not allow ATR flights with normal passenger load.

Probably they can operate ATR with limited payload/passenger load that sacrifices break-even load factor/revenue and makes such flights economically unviable for the airline.

Btw, runway at one end appears to have some space for extension.

Muzaffarabad should have a Proper airport. its very much needed by Mirpuris and other kashmiris travelling in & out of kashmir via ISB every time and we all know what ISB airport is like.
Instead of Multan they should have built the two airports Muzaffarabad/mirpur and Faisalabad.

Residents of Mirpur cannot use Muzaffarabad airport anyway. To go to mzd from mirpur, one has to travel to islamabad and then proceed via Murree.

That's a rare photo - thank you Ali for sharing.

Found this photo of an aircraft in United Nations (UN) markings apparently photographed from Muzaffarabad Airport terminal building.
