Why can't the TV guy just say that collapsed landing gear area is being supported by a dolly and then the aircraft being towed to a stand. He is dragging the commentary un-necessarily.
Damage looks very bad , not sure what exactly happened but from the damage that plan must have landed very hard to have slid following landing gear collapse.
As always the facts of this investigation most likely will never be revealed for few years. It is a pity our government department is either run by politicians or bureaucrats who many times have no background in the field and also forensics.

Some of the aircraft that were seen using Lahore Airport's Runway 18R/36L on September 1 when Runway 18L/36R was unavailable due to PIA ATR 42-500 (AP-BHJ) incident.
PIA Airbus A310-300 landing on Runway 36L.

PIA Boeing 737-300 landing on Runway 36L.

Jordan Aviation Boeing 767-200ER (on lease to Shaheen Air) landing on Runway 36L.

Qatar Airways Airbus A320 takeoff from Runway 36L.

Uzbekistan Airways Airbus A320 takeoff from Runway 36L.

Images of AP-BHJ recovery work on September 1 that show metal sheets and Marsden Matting used for pulling ATR out of soft grassy area.

Re: PIA ATR 42-500 Runway Excursion Incident at Lahore Airpo
According to following news report, the ATR made first contact with ground on runway overrun area and also struck some part of aircraft arresting barrier system installed on runway for PAF fighter aircraft.
Information about runway overrun area on Wikipedia.Safety Investigation Board (SIB) President Air Commodore (r) Basit visited the Lahore airport and recorded the statements of the crew including pilot and copilot. The defense secretary also visited the Lahore airport.
According to the sources, pilot Faheem said in his initial statement that the plane descended quickly, touched the overrun area and rammed into a foundation of the runway constructed for arresting barrier of the PAF planes.
A PIA Engineering Branch official said that it could not be asserted that length of runway was insufficient for landing of an ATR plane. He said that runway length required for the landing of ATR was 4,000-foot, whereas the length of runway of Allama Iqbal International Airport was more than 8,000-foot.
He said the rain could not be cited as a reason for the accident because the planes landed amid the downpour in South East Asian states like India, Bangladesh, Burma, Thailand and Malaysia. He, however, said heavy crosswind mattered in such circumstances.
The official said the most probable cause of this accident was the defective Anti Skid Braking System. Another technical officer said that in case of a thin layer of water covering runway, a plane makes hard landing at high speed and aquaplaning could take place generating frictional heat that could damage braking system.

AbbasBlast pads, also known as overrun areas or stopways, are often constructed just before the start of a runway where jet blast produced by large planes during the takeoff roll could otherwise erode the ground and eventually damage the runway. Overrun areas are also constructed at the end of runways as emergency space to slowly stop planes that overrun the runway on a landing gone wrong, or to slowly stop a plane on a rejected takeoff or a take-off gone wrong. Blast pads are often not as strong as the main paved surface of the runway and are marked with yellow chevrons. Planes are not allowed to taxi, take-off or land on blast pads, except in an emergency.

Seems undershot landing has been identified as the cause of this PIA ATR incident.

AbbasRegarding ATR incident at Lahore Airport that took place on 31 August, 2012, at 1510 hours, and resulted in blockage of runway for few hours. This must be made clear that PIA’s ATR never skidded of the runway but it was a short landing by the pilot that resulted in this accident.

Recently I was onboard PK-651 and as we were about 10 minutes near Lahore, Captain announced diversion to Multan which I believe was in wake of this incident (which also happened under bad weather). We remained stranded in Multan from 1315-1700 hours after that we flew back to Lahore. I dont know if ATR can land under rain and thunderstorm comfortably as jet but I guess after this accident, ATR pilots have been asked to go the safe way

The question is why a modern aircraft equipped with all necessary aids landed short of rwy. It could have resulted in a catastrophe.

More like pilot was hand flying the approach. which he was not proficient at or was not trained for.
Airplane is flown with brain not with stick and rudder.

Is this the inevitable result of "favorites" being inducted as PIA pilots over those who were far superior in merit?

Giving the benefit of doubght to the flight deck crew before we hang them. The METAR showed some strong gusts for that that hour if i recall 310/30kts.
They mostly likely would have been flying an ILS approach. A quick dfdr readout would identify the cause by analysis of AP disconnect height and deviation from the glide slope combined with the recorded wind parameters would idetify the cause of the short landing. The PIA managemnt would have known the actual reason wthin 24 hours as soon as they processed the dfdr data unfortunatley that would not be shared with the public.

It's hard to believe that the ATR pilot wasn't trained for visual approach. ATRs serve mostly the small destinations with no ILS available so most of the times, ATRs fly visual approaches and the pilots are trained for it adequately.Squawk_1200 wrote:More like pilot was hand flying the approach. which he was not proficient at or was not trained for.

small airport or not, every pilot is FIRST trained to handfly, then progresses on to advance types and systems. Without knowing the details one cant say why they messed up the approach and landed on katcha.

PALPA Suggests Installation of Low Level Windshear Alert System at Major Airports in Pakistan
KARACHI: Pakistan Air Line Pilots' Association (PALPA) despite other technical analysis of PK-653 landing incident in Lahore on August 31, has suggested to the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) to immediately take following steps to avoid the incidents of this nature in future:
- Installation of a Low Level Windshear Alert System (LLWAS). These should be installed at all major airport in Pakistan (Lahore, Karachi, Peshawar, Islamabad and Quetta). With this technology the remote sensor data received is transmitted to a master station, which generates warnings when wind shear or micro burst conditions are detected. There has been no wind shear related accident on airports with installed LLWAS for over 20 years.
- Air Traffic Controller should undertake Crew Resource Management (CRM) workshops with pilots/crew at least once a year for better communication among them, which can surely avoid any such accidents in future, and
- The government should provide latest equipment carrying most modern technology to meet office in order to further improve weather reporting systems for accurate weather reporting.

The Aviation Herald:
On Sep 11th 2012 the French BEA reported quoting Pakistani Authorities, that the aircraft touched down just at the beginning of the paved surface - undershoot area - to the right of the extended runway 36R centerline, started skidding to the right and came to a stop about 1700 feet past the runway threshold and 60 feet off the right edge of the runway.
The right main gear collapsed, debris off the aircraft was collected from the beginning of the runway end safety area ahead of runway 36R to the final position of the aircraft. The fuselage received damage as well, the extent of the damage is still being assessed.
