Sayani assumes charge as PIA deputy managing director
KARACHI (July 18 2009): Salim Sayani assumed charge as Deputy Managing Director of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) on July 17, 2009. He is an airlines' veteran with over 30 years of experience in the international aviation business. After completing his SSC in First Division, he travelled to the United States of America for higher education where he has been residing for over 38 years.

He was part of the technical experts team assigned to PIA during the A300-600 acquisition in 1981. His efforts were highly credited for the smooth transition of PIA engine shop into a full functional overhaul facility. Sayani returned to the US and joined American Airlines in 1984.
He moved up through various Senior Management positions during his 24 years' tenure in the areas of airlines operations, finance, marketing, fleet operations engineering, power plant engineering, airlines planning and operations. During this period the sales increased from $12 million to $175 million.
He is also the president of his aviation consulting firm specialising in the area of total airlines management and application of powerful tools such as Six-Sigma, Lean Manufacturing and Continuous Improvements Processes required to return ailing airlines back to profitability.
His dynamic leadership, passion for aviation, vast experience in the field, and his single-minded focus on customer care will greatly serve PIA return to prosperity and become 'Pride-of-Pakistan' again! He is married, and has three children.-PR

He is more qualified than the MD and the Chairman of the airline; combined. You can't blame the person if they keep their old job , just out of their own security because who is to say that in a few days time he tries some thing productive and it doesn't please every one and he loses his job.Conflict of interest

Not when your company already has contract/s with PIA & is to take over management (outsourcing - some will insist it is privatization) of Maint/Engg. SABRE, as a bonafide Aviation company was/is much more qualified & we know the outcome. He is more qualified than the MD and the Chairman of the airline; combined. Your comment reminds me of an interesting letter to the editor of Dawn many years ago. Believe it was admiral Sirohy who had been extradited from USA on corruption charges. He ended up paying something like 20% of what he stole (many feel it was his right). The writer pleaded in his letter that he be given only one equal chance to rob, so long as returning 20% of the loot was the maximum punishment.

Re: PIA Deputy Managing Director Appointed
Looking at Salim Sayani's impressive educational and professional experience in aviation and engineering, he seems to be a great choice for the role. He can move up to lead the airlines after some time.
I am little concerned with another news today that PIA plans to privatize its engineering and some other departments. Considering this gentleman is in business for himself now a days, it'd tempting for him to capitalize on this opportunity. If that happens, we may see repeat of past when some of PIA Directors indulged themselves in similar activities.

If he does , then he wouldn't be the worse person to lead the organization. This trend of spin-offs with Engineering or Technical Services is really taking off in the last few years. Its not just the Manufacturers conducting MRO's any more, many airlines ( Lufthansa, SR technical Services, FINNAIR, & Etc) have a separate entity that is wholly owned or partly owned by the airlines in conjunction with a third-party. This is a very profitable business and PIA has had years of expertise in conducting Maintenance Services for third-party customers.bernyjee wrote:Looking at Salim Sayani's impressive educational and professional experience in aviation and engineering, he seems to be a great choice for the role. The question is will they take the Engineers in to confidence is this spin-off because this is a technically demanding field and expertise in this industry is very cherished. We already know that a lot of gulf airlines have been scooping up Pakistani engineers. If you give them a profit-sharing interest, then who would in their right mind would leave a comfortable life-style in Pakistan.

Re: PIA Deputy Managing Director Appointed
mshassan, I understand ALL would u said....my concern is NOT as much spin off business units...my concern is that a sitting MD/DMD spins if off and contracts to his own organization since he is in the same business already (as this new executive is in).
By the way, all the other business units PIA has contracted out so far were basically scams and resulted in internal profiteering for PIA executives. Engineering is one of PIA's best units where political nepotism had not made its way much (as much as I understand), it should not be spinned off. That would be a huge mistake.
May be PIA can do things differently this time, we shall still have to wait and see.....

Re: PIA Deputy Managing Director Appointed
I think i am not mistaking because the sitting MD of PIA gave away PIA handling on ground in Jeddah to NFS sometime ago about 7 years. Sayani was with NFS at this time. Now PIA will be flight by a triangle of Ejaz Haroon , Salim Mandviwala and Sayani Salim. Looking like AVM Niaz work for Ahmed Saeed ashamed by these gentleman executives.
