Howard arrives on three-day visit

By our correspondent

ISLAMABAD: Australian Prime Minister John Howard arrived on a three-day official visit to Pakistan here on Monday night.

He was received at the airport by Minister in Waiting Ijazul Haq and other senior officials. A boy attired in national dress presented him a bouquet as the Australian prime minister alighted from the Royal Australian Air Force C-130. He is accompanied by Madame Janette Howard and a 21-member entourage.

The visit is aimed at further strengthening bilateral relations between Pakistan and Australia in diverse fields, said a Foreign Office spokesperson. His itinerary includes a call on President Pervez Musharraf and full delegation-level talks with his Pakistani counterpart and a visit to earthquake-affected area of Dhanni.

John Howard is the second head of the government of Australia to visit Pakistan. His visit comes in the wake of the visit of President Pervez Musharraf to Australia from 13-16 June this year at the invitation of Governor General of Australia that was described an important milestone in bilateral relationship between the two countries.

The visit, first by a head of state from Pakistan, had laid solid foundations for a strong and multi-faceted relationship. During John Howard' stay in Islamabad, the two sides would sign agreements on Agricultural Linkages Programme, Scholarships Award Programme, Gas sale/purchase agreement between Sui Southern & BHP of Australia and Award of Copper Extraction License between the Government of Balochistan and Tethyan, an Australian company. A number of memoranda of understanding (MoUs) would also be signed. These include (i) MoU on cooperation to combat international terrorism (ii) MoU for the establishment of an agricultural sector linkages programme (iii) MoU on exchange of information between the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan and Australian Securities and Investments Commission.

Australia has announced a total contribution of Australian Dollar 14.6 million (US$ 10.6 million) for earthquake relief operations in Pakistan. The aid has been channelled through the WFP, Unesco, FAO and Australian NGOs.

APP adds: Talking to APP, John Howard said he would be discussing a whole range of bilateral issues, including the war against terror and further assistance for the devastating earthquake. Howard said he was looking forward to meet President Pervez Musharraf, the prime minister and his cabinet colleagues.

Also talking to newsmen at the airport, the Australian prime minister said he was pleased to be in Pakistan. Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono will also pay an official visit to Pakistan from November 24-25.

During the visit, he would hold talks with President Musharraf on enhancing bilateral relationship. Several agreements are expected to be signed during his two-day visit here, including a Framework Agreement for Comprehensive Economic Partnership. "The visit will provide the two countries a useful opportunity to review and strengthen bilateral cooperation in a number of areas and to exchange views on regional and international situation," the Foreign Office said. The visit is part of high-level exchanges between the two brotherly countries. President Yudhoyono will be accompanied by Madame Yudhoyono and a 50-member delegation.

Looks like the Australian Prime Minister arrived on a Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) Boeing 737-700 BBJ and not on a RAAF C-130 as reported by some of the local newspapers.
