Some news sites suggesting shot down by pro-Russian militants. If that is true, it's going to create a new series of political tension.

May the souls of those on board rest in peace. Already confirmed no survivors :(

Pardon my ignorance but can a missile go to an height of an airliner flying high in the sky? Or if that plane was flying low due to unknown reason.

Whatever the case may be, feel really sorry for Malaysian Airline with so many loss of lives.

Yes but that sort of missile can't be the one shot fired from missile-gun on shoulders. A mounted rocket-gun on truck etc. is required to shot a missile to a height of 32000 feet. Nonetheless, small terrorist groups can't have such technology. Wa-ALLAH aalam.

Feel really sad for Malaysians! :(

shocked after hearing this news...Inna Lillahi wa inna ilaihi raji'un
Some also mentioned that it could also be a fighter jet who have brought this 777 down.
Anyhow everyone is blaming currently the other party. So we have to wait for the real reason for the Crash.
IMO Airlines should avoid flying over Ukraine Air Space (or at least over the east part) as soon as it is not clear what the reason and responsibility was

It feels like Rebels in Ukraine are in possession of SAM missiles. Back in 2003, a DHL Cargo Frieghter was shot by Iraqi Rebels using Shoulder fired SAM missile high over Baghdad. However the sheer brilliance and skills of the pilots managed to bring down the plane on Baghdad Airport without any loss of lives though the aircraft was permanently damaged

DHL A300 was an easier target because it was climbing after takeoff from Baghdad.

This unlucky Malaysian B777 was at cruising altitude.

There should be absolutely ZERO commercial airline traffic over countries which are having some type of armed conflict. Ukraine, Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Afghanistan.

I am unable to see playback option on flightradar24 anymore. Does anyone know if this has been removed. I know you can view historic flights but I just wanted a playback over Ukraine. It use to appear in left hand panel under the searchbox

With this definition, Pakistan too is included.

Exactly... and by the way Pakistan already is a victim in this case, see the number of foreign airlines left operating here now. God forbid I can foresee airlines not flying anymore over PK's airspace in near future if such conditions prevail.

Targetting an airliner at cruise altitudes, i.e FL330 and above required HIMAD (high to Medium Altitude Air Defence) systems. Such systems, unlike the shoulder launched self contained systems, Stringer, RBS-70 or blowpipe to name a few require sophistciated support system i.e surviellence radars, command centre, launch vehicle etc. These systems typically comrprise a no of vehicles and require a multiple man crew. Fortunately, terrorists in Pakistan donot have access to such capability yet.
The threat of course is to low flying (initial climb and appraoch) phases of commercial aircraft where the aircraft is within the range of shoulder launced missiles of AA guns e.g 12.7, 14.5mm which are fould aplenty with taliban terrorists.
