With potentialy the biggest aviation market in the world and one which would see billions flow out of the country to Boeing and Airbus, China is pretty determined to keep a chunk of that money home by giving business to local product(s)...They have already got the ball rolling with a regional jet ARJ21 and next logical step is the widebody...

China to launch big plane joint venture by beginning of May: report
SHANGHAI, March 19 (AFP) Mar 19, 2008
http://www.sinodaily.com/2006/080319094 ... 2j1be.html
China is expected by May to officially launch a company making large jets that could eventually rival Boeing and Airbus, official media reported Wednesday.

The state assets watchdog and the government of Shanghai, where the aircraft will be assembled, will be the first and second biggest shareholders respectively, the China Securities Journal reported.

China's two major state-owned aircraft manufacturers, China Aviation Industry Corp I (AVIC I) and AVIC II, will jointly be the third largest shareholder of the firm, it said, citing unnamed sources.

Three state-owned companies -- Aluminium Corp of China (Chinalco), the country's largest steel maker Baosteel Group and Sinochem Corp will each invest one billion yuan (140 million dollars) for a five percent stake in the 20-billion-yuan firm, it said.

China has announced a plan to develop its own big aircraft -- a 150-seat passenger aircraft or freighters handling more than 100 tons of cargo.

China is likely to invest about 60 billion yuan in research and development for the big plane project, the source told the newspaper.

Late last year it unveiled the 70 to 100-seat ARJ-21, China's first home-made passenger airliner.

Who will buy it?
Remember that chinese airlines, all together, already have ordered 20 A350s and 60 B787s!

BTW, FAA certification is in progress for China's first airliner ARJ21...I don't see any reason why they won't seek and get FAA certification for this and other widebodies...

I am assuming you meant to say once the CS-2000 prototype is manufactured, FAA certification will be sought. As you cannot seek FAA certification based on blueprints.
