Pakistan's Trade Minister Proposes Open Sky Policy With Rival India
Monday September 19, 7:27 am ET

NEW DELHI (AP) -- Pakistan's trade minister on Monday proposed India and Pakistan allow each other's airlines to fly to any destination in the other country, a move he said would improve trade ties.
Only state-owned carriers are currently permitted to fly between two cities in India and two in Pakistan.

But officials from both sides plan to meet in Islamabad on Sept. 27-28 to discuss details of an aviation agreement, part of a broader peace process between the two nuclear-armed rivals.

"We in the government of Pakistan have no problems for an open sky policy with India," Pakistani Commerce Minister Humayun Akhtar Khan told Indian business leaders in New Delhi. "Any of your airlines and any of ours should be able to go to any destination in either countries."

Khan said India and Pakistan have also agreed to look at the outdated shipping agreement between the two countries.

Pak airlines could take advantage of this as Indian passengers do not need a transit visa whilst Indian carriers will have to rely on O n D pax.

Yeah, I think this will be highly beneficial to Pak based carriers, esp. PIA and in the long-run, Airblue, as they will be able to tap a huge pool of 6th freedom traffic and benefit from economies of scale. In addition, the O&D traffic on PAK-INDIA sector is poised to grow substantially provided the ongoing normalization of ties continues at the same rate as last couple of years.

But see. Ties won't be normal, until issues are not solved. The Undian PM goes to America, accuesses Pakistan of cross-border terrorism, I don't think that would be good for the so called 'peace process'.

The core issues have not been solved yet. If playing a few cricket matches, exchanging delegations, and music artits will bring peace, then I guess the U.S and Iraq. or U.S and Iran should adopt a similar strategy to resolve the issues among them.

When core issues such as Kashmir, Saichen, Sir Creek, Junagarh, etc. etc. are not solved, there will never be peace in the region.

If you think Pakistan and India are going to be the best of friends in the near future, then your very wrong.

A dose of reality from Basit. However, both countries need to stop holding trade and free movement of people ransom to this so called process, which will last a long time and ultimately will end in the LOC becoming the border, thus igniting another militancy, this time against Pakistan.

Open sky policy on Pak radar

New Delhi, Sept. 19:
Pakistan today proposed that India and its neighbour open up their skies and allow airlines to fly to any destination in each country.

Pakistan commerce minister Humayun Akhtar Khan said he was ready to go for an open skies policy between the two nations, besides easing visa restrictions.

Khan made his offer at a gathering organised by Ficci here today. He said his government had "no problems" in forging an open sky policy and would try to liberalise its visa regime for businessmen and others.

He, however, did not give any timeframe but said the two countries had set the ball rolling by deciding to take a fresh look at the bilateral civil aviation agreement.

India wants Pakistan to allow budding private airlines from this country to fly into airports at Karachi and Lahore. However, the move is most likely to get nixed at home as well as in Pakistan.

Last year, when India announced an open skies policy for South Asia, the announcement hid the fact that it was open for all nations in the seven-member group, except Pakistan.

A move by India to open up its skies has to be reciprocal and intelligence services had voiced strong reservations as it would mean a larger influx of Pakistani passengers into the country. Pakistani intelligence services are known to have similar reservations.
