PIA's 800 Meal Trolleys Go Missing from Airports

LAHORE, March 21: More than 800 meal trolleys of the Pakistan International Airlines worth millions of rupees have been "missing" from different domestic and international airports, according to an official report.

The price of a trolley reportedly ranges between $200 and $400.

"The trolleys have been missing from different domestic and international stations for about two years," the report says.

The PIA management has informed the board of directors that an action is underway against those responsible for the theft.

However, no responsibility has been fixed yet.

The PIA board has also taken a strong exception to the matter and observed that the report of chief internal auditor on the status of “missing" trolleys had not been prepared in collaboration with the external auditor.

Interestingly, the management had informed the board in one of the meetings that actually the inventory record was not updated which had been "reconciled with the physical number (of trolleys)". However, the board directed the management to conduct a probe into the matter and circulate its findings among the members.

A source in the catering department told Dawn that the trolleys had gone missing along with the catering stuff, thus causing more loss to the national flag carrier which was already in financial mess.

"Understaffing and the poor check have been the major reasons for the theft of such a large number of trolleys," the source said, adding the meal trolleys were mostly stolen at foreign stations where the management had '“virtually no control" on different departments. He also cited non-professionalism in catering department, saying a good number of its heads had been replaced during the last few years.

PIA spokesman Sultan Hasan told Dawn that as the national airlines audit had detected the disappearance of the trolleys the investigation was under way.

"Those responsible for it will not escape punishment," he claimed.

Btw, PIA Precision Engineering Complex (PEC) also manufactured certified meal trolleys and probably continues to do so.

yes true correct news it same other major most other airlines

my deaf friend works catering in Lufthansa in Frankfurt for 30 years and he had seen some staff theft trolley, foods, meal, things from catering and some lucky escape some arrest and some sack staff.

12 years ago Malaysia Airlines lost some meal, food, etc in Heathrow but many times lost knife, fork, spoon, plate, cup etc

last time some catering had no CCTV but today upgrade new CCTV and secuirty guard. Some honest some fraud.

I visited British Airways Catering and I saw Manager gave me free first class meal.
