PIA Fokker F-27 Friendship Mk 200

Fokker F-27 Friendship Mk 200  (Frank Ellemers Collection)

This rare photo from Frank's collection shows AP-ALN in 1974. On July 5, 1994, AP-ALN with 4 crew members and 38 passengers onboard was operating flight PK-684 from Islamabad to Dera Ismail Khan. On final approach to Dera Ismail Khan Airport, the flight crew faced problems with no.1 engine. The approach was continued, but poor alignment with the runway forced the crew to go-around. The no. 2 engine was set at full power and gears and flaps were retracted, but the aircraft continued to lose height. A turn was made to avoid a river and the F-27 touched down in a paddy field. The aircraft slid for 300 meters before colliding with a tree. Fortunately all passengers and crew members aboard the aircraft remained unhurt in this accident. AP-ALN was damaged beyond economical repairs and withdrawn from service after this accident
