Parachinar Airport Expansion To Be Considered

Post by Abbas Ali » Fri Apr 15, 2011 10:06 pm

April 15 - According to APP and Pakistan Television (PTV) news reports, today Interior Minister Rehman Malik informed National Assembly that Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) will be asked/requested for expansion of Parachinar Airport in Kurram Agency, Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA), to allow operations of larger aircraft.

The minister said that currently the airport is not fully functional. I think it means the airport will be considered fully functional if & when PIA begins scheduled passenger flights for Parachinar.

If expansion plan for Parachinar Airport gets implemented then most likely it will become capable of handling larger turboprop aircraft like PIA ATR 42-500. Most likely runway extension will be the main requirement of airport's expansion plan.

In 1990s, PIA operated scheduled passenger flights between Peshawar and Parachinar with DHC-6-300 Twin Otter aircraft that was capable of performing Short Take-Off and Landing (STOL) from short air strips.

Currently light aircraft of privately-owned Pakistani companies operate charter air service between Peshawar and Parachinar. Report of complaints against unfair and high fares charged by one of those privately-owned charter air service companies appeared in a local newspaper few days ago.

In January 2011, Pakistan Army also started twice a week Peshawar-Parachinar helicopter service for local tribesmen.
