exqueeze my question, but why are three pilots needed for a two-person cockpit plane ?

The caption under the picture states that the cockpit crew belongs to a 747, both the 742 and 743 have 3-person cockpit crews.

I think its perhaps a little confusing with the 772 pic below!

oops ! me being myself and not reading the caption - and yea classic 747 = 3 person cockpit
