I bet airlines loved switching to the 744, nothing like this on it to my knowledge.

I think the FE panel adds character to the flight deck.

Those switches on the panel are hardly ever used. I was also amazed at the number of switches and i asked the flight engineer that how do you remember what each one does and he told me that they are hardly ever used.

I Don't agree with you smarties
Either you have asked a flight engineer who himself doesnot know B747 operations or there is some other mistake.
I can tell you thousands of things, even from this pic.

1.Well the A/C is running on tank to engine configuration
2.All four generator are in line and working.
3.All three AC packs are working (seems like nearly ful load)
4.engine vibration level is normal with eng 2 a bit more than others.
5.All four engine driven hydraulic pumps are working normal.
6.All four Air driven hydraulic pump are on for giving backup support if engine driven pump(s) fails.
7.Air bleed pressure is normal.
even more thing to tell from this panel and there is some panel (not in the pic) above it.

Hashim Jabbar Memon.
PS: Ask me more, if you are intrested. Almost 90-95% switches, button, knobs, guages are used on every flight sector. [except the CBs(circuit breakers)]

most of the buttons and switches are used during startup to provide hydraulics to systems 1 2 3 and 4 - each supplied from each engine - system 4 can be electrically driven as it provides brake hydraulics - for use when the engines are shut. There is also an APU panel for starting the APU. The four red switches bring the engines "online" and use their air to power plane functions - i believe the altimiter shows "cabin altitude" so a depressurisation can be monitored - i.e. if cabin alt gets too high. The lower section consists of the fuel tank guages and fuel feed pumps and valves. the red panel on the far right side is for fuel jettison and thus is covered for precaution.....many of the plane functions are controlled from this site - saying it is "never used" is quite misleading, lots of acticity happends here however during the fligt only monitoring is prob. required.

i agree with iqbal. during a normal uneventful flt its just monitoring and so is the case with other functions of the aircraft in the flight deck. the 747 is infact an automated aircraft, even the classics.!!
