This 5th engine mounting pod was a very good option by Boeing to ferry an engine with some fuel and performance penalties
I think of all the747 with PIA only TWO had this provision

Very much a real picture! A 777 can carry an engine but not under its wing. An engine core (without fan) can fit in the cargo hold of a 777. On arrival it can be reassembled together.

The Air India flight 182, 747 that was blown up off the coast of Ireland on June 23, 1985, was also ferrying a 5th engine that it was returning to Heathrow from Toronto following replacement for another previous issue.

After the arrival of B-747-200C, the need to ferry engines externally was not needed.

I did a fifth pod flight with Captain Frazer and Flight Engineer Nasim on the B747 somewhere in Europe to Pakistan. The captain called us to his room to brief on the procedure to be followed.
