A London airport was closed for about an hour after a helicopter made an emergency landing.

At 3.13pm on Thursday, the Bell Jet Ranger helicopter declared an emergency and asked to land at the closest airport.

It managed to land at London City Airport where the crew member and a passenger were able to disembark safely.

A spokeswoman for the airport said: "As a helicopter was travelling in the area it declared a full emergency and it needed to land.

"It made a full emergency landing at London City Airport and a crew member and a passenger both safely disembarked.

"The runway has now reopened - it was closed for just over an hour - and flights are starting to get back to normal but there will be a bit of a knock-on effect so passengers are advised to contact their airlines."

The spokeswoman said there was no further information at the moment on the nature of the emergency or whether the aircraft suffered any damage.

She added that the Air Accidents Investigation Branch had been notified of the incident.
