Crew of LOT B767 receive state honours

Yesterday the crew of the LOT B767, that made an emergency wheels up landing at Chopin Warsaw last week, were decorated with state honours by the President of Poland, Bronislaw Komorowski at a ceremony held in the Presidential Palace.

Captain Tadeusz Wrona was awarded the Officer’s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta,
First Officer Jerzy Szwarc and the Chief Purser received the Knight’s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta and every other member of the crew, the Gold Cross of Merit.

The Polish flag carrier explained that the “Order of Polonia is conferred for outstanding achievement and the Cross of Merit for actions above and beyond the call of normal duty and to the significant benefit of the State or its citizens”.

Marcin Piróg, LOT’s CEO said “I would like to congratulate the entire crew as they receive the President’s highest accolades. We are all extraordinarily proud of the superb skills and training our pilots and flight attendants demonstrated during the landing”.

Last week, the crew were awarded the airline’s own highest honours, the LOT Polish Airlines Badge of Honour, 1st Class with three diamonds and the Badge of Honour 2nd and 3rd class.

Well deserved. This is comparable to the Hudson River landing of the A320 except that here the pilots had more time. The Sioux City landing of the DC10 where steering for landing and descent was accomplished by varying thrust of the two remaining engines with no other flight controls or hydraulics was a masterpiece of airmanship. There were fatalities. The BA's B777 landing after losing power on both engines at Heathrow on a flight from Beijing has been downplayed for reasons beyond me. Its time to acknowledge that.
