Post by mohsin habib »

why dont PIA fix all their fleet with winglets since they save considerable amount of fuel ?

A310's have wingtip fences, not winglets.

No PK airplane has winglets.

PIA's Boeing 777-240LRs and Boeing 777-340ERs have raked wingtips to improve fuel economy.

See following link for more info about Winglet, Wingtip Fence, Raked Wingtip and other wingtip devices:

Not really.

The 747-300 is old school tech. In fact, so is the 747-400.

Blended winglets are designed for narrow bodies and widebodies B747s also, i have seen test shots of 22' tall blended wingtips on test 747-100/200 and yes it dose save 5% on fuel consumption on long haul flights but none of the airlines ever order these for 747s, yet new NG 737s are built with these and some airlines have installed these in smaller size on B757s compaired to B747s!. BTW B744 does come with winglits except for D version, that is how its easily identified as 400 series by most regular people.

Now newer raked wingtips are more superior then blended one on wide bodies, new B748 is designed with them.

I know of the blended winglets you refer to for the 747-100/200. Its the APB designed ones- and they DONT save 5% fuel.

If they did, like the 757's that have the retrofit winglets, so would these 747's.

The fact of the matter is, tha apart from the 747-400, there are no ad hoc winglets.

Yes, and its nowhere near 3% let alone 5%.

Lest we forget the additional weight the winglets add- it add's up to greater inefficiency.
