does anyone know how the alliance between Lufthansa and PIA is going?

If there is not enough export demand from Pakistan then why there is need for a new Cargo Airport at Sialkot?

With the 3.6KM long runway (longest in the country). It will difinitely be used by large cargo aircraft like 747s and maybe A 380s in future.

A question to the "specialists": Can PIA found 747-400F on the used market? I think it is very good possibility, isnt it?
Or 747-400 passenger aircraft which they can convert later. I think in the coming years there will be more 744's (pax version), on the market, because of the entry into service of the A380.

I think as long as TK is chairman, we won't be seeing any more used 747's in the fleet as he is strictly anti-747 at this point.

If the Boeing sales team can convice him otherwise, especially regarding the 747-8 thats a different matter.

Sales tax on aircraft import withdrawn

KARACHI: The Central Board of Revenue (CBR) has withdrawn 15 per cent sales tax on the import of all types of aircraft, which will take effect from June 5, 2006.

The decision to scrap sales tax on airplane import is aimed at reducing the import and import-financing cost of aircraft.

Pakistan’s air freight business is dominated by foreign airlines due to lack of capacity on local freight carriers, leading to payment of more than $1 billion a year in freight and insurance charges to foreign airlines carrying Pakistan’s import and export goods.

However, the latest CBR decision is expected to encourage national airlines to induct new freight carriers into their fleets.


Meanwhile, the Central Board of Revenue has made three important changes in customs duty proposals announced in the federal budget for 2006-07.

Under the first change, if any passenger or overseas Pakistani coming into Pakistan brings such goods which fall under the category of commercial quantities other than the allowed baggage, will have to pay 30 per cent additional customs duty.

This decision will end more than 55 years of controversy over the levy of customs duty on such commercial goods.

Earlier, additional and deputy collectors of customs enjoyed discretionary powers in charging customs duty and other taxes and they never used such powers judiciously.

Under the second amendment, import of used or second hand auto parts has been allowed but with heavy customs duty of 30 per cent.

Under the third amendment, the CBR has put an end a long-drawn controversy over the levy of customs duty on the import of highway dump trucks during last year.

The CBR says if these highway dump trucks “entered (into Pakistan) for (customs) clearance up to 4th June, 2006 and cleared by 30th June, 2006 then these trucks will attract five per cent customs duty.”
