Instead of leasing cargo aircraft from other companies, I would like to see PIA buy one or two Airbus A310-300 freighters for cargo flights.

Perhaps they will estimate the potential of such transport and then, after some time, will buy their own aircrafts.

There was talk of getting rid of a couple of 743's next year.

airlines from all over the world pick up huge chunks of cargo from karachi which is the cargo hub of pakistan underlining the potential there is for pia to capture. if all these foregn careers can send in their huge 747s and fill them up pia with the proper marketing efforts or even without much of a campaign will cannot possibly fail. every mango season an ab4 would be leased spending a huge amount on rentals, other then that the combis fly back and forth the transatlantic with every space of cargo taken up. all this is a refelctive of cargo demand that is being devoured by other carreers because of our own lack of cargo capability. nyc frankfurt etc are ideally suited to 747s which are the best freighters in the world to date for carrying cargo. i would never recommend the 743s being converted in to pure freighters for a number of reasons. firstly, the 743s are basicly luxury aircraft and since pia does not have any aircraft that can equal its pax capacity such as the 744, it would be a huge loss to lose those extra seats on high density routes. secondly the 743s are rolls royce powered which by no means are unrelible but cannot carry the same weight a GE powered 747 would easily be able to. although the 743s carry full payload on flights in and out of uk all year long but cargo weights demand stronger and more robust engines which explains why even an 85000 hour 747C can be deployed strenously on these heavy routes, owing to the extra engine power. pia should look at airlines such as air aitala ,saudia, cathay, jal , lufthansa, airfrance and so many other european careers that are cashing in on the potential in karachi and making rich cargo dividents for the last so many years . operating 310s on high frequencys to nyc would be costly and highly inefficient cus of the huge cargo traffic that is ubiquotous on other cargo routes as well. i would like to see pia purchase two 742Fs to replace the combis with an airframe of around 50-60k hours ,low cycles powered with GE engines at a quarter of the price of used 744s, and the added advantage of already having an inhouse engineering facility for servicing these series. i am sure there are plenty 74fs manufactured in 84-5 and beyond that pia can grab. anything second to a 74f would be an a330 and there after a md 80 or dc 10 but 310s as freighters are not good enough. if FE jawed shaikh gets to put in his word it is expected he will tip the 74f as the first choice since he too believes in the cargo futurity of pia hence bigger sized planes.

WICHITA, Kan., May 23, 1996 -- The Boeing Commercial Airplane Group, Wichita Division, announced today that it is expanding its modification product line by offering 747- 300 combi- and passenger-to-freighter conversions.

The first 747-300 combi-to-freighter modification position is available in Wichita's Modification Responsibility Center this November, and the first 747-300 passenger-to- freighter position is available in the second quarter of 1997.

"For a number of years we've been able to deliver value to operators of 747-100 and -200 aircraft through our modification program," said Vic McMullen, Wichita's Modification Responsibility Center director. "Now we're building on our earlier success to offer the same value to 747-300 operators."

Like 747-200 modifications, the -300 work will involve removing all passenger provisions, installing a rear upper deck cargo door and surround structures, replacing floor beams, seat tracks and floor panels to strengthen the main deck, and installing a powered cargo handling system and smoke detection system.

Additionally, Boeing Wichita will modify the extended upper deck to accommodate 10-foot high cargo containers on the main deck. Upon completion the modified -300's cargo capability will be nearly identical to that of the -200 special freighter aircraft -- about 220,000 pounds, or 110 tons -- and have a range of 3,300 air miles at full payload.

Combi aircraft feature a large side cargo door on the main deck for cargo loading in the aft section, and passenger accommodations in the forward two-thirds section of the airplane. The work required to convert a combi aircraft to a dedicated freighter is, therefore, less extensive than passenger-to-freighter modifications.

The 747-300 modifications are expected to take about three months to complete. "We can turn the airplane around relatively quickly," McMullen said, "and that enables our customers to get back into the air quicker and recover their costs in a shorter period of time. The result is a more competitive position for them."

Boeing projects a market of about 30 conversions to the 747-300 freighter. Since 1972 Boeing Wichita has modified 70 Boeing 747 airplanes to freighter configuration.

Hi F.K.,
It is always very interesting what you say. But Ive just one thing to say: make paragraphs in your texts, it will be more easy to read. Thanks

I think the best option for PIA would be 3 A310-300F acquired from FedEx. The 747 is too big and please lets put the 742's to rest once and for all.

Those airlines that are still flying the 742F are doing so because those a/c are of 80's and 90's vintage, not the 70's.

Are they ending the deal with MNG? Swiss World Cargo are also ending their's with the company and are looking for a similar new agreement as PIA.

the larger size of the 747 is a crucial plus for the huge cargo potential in and out of pakistan. and i too am in favor of 742s of a younger age so that they can be used longer. as it is freighters have a longer useful life then pax versions. plus the 747 is the best reply to to the market needs right now. if other airlines can pick cargo from karachi why cant pia the national carreer use the same equipment to rival them. you have no idea how much demand there is . small aircraft are not the answer to the cargo vaccum seen in pia right now.
