MoU signed between SIAL and APA Air Systems FZC

SIALKOT, Feb 20 (APP) - A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed between Sialkot International Airport Limited (SIAL) and APA Air Systems FZC, a Sharjah based airline here on Monday.

Under the MOU the first flight of APA would land on Sialkot International airport.

Speaking on the occasion, Chief Executive Sialkot International Airport Khawar Anwar Khawaja said the airport would be operative in middle of current year and necessary arrangements are being given final touches in this regard.

He said DHL and OCS had showed willingness for operating flights from Sialkot International Airport as this export-oriented city and hub of cottage industry of the country had a unique repute for its export culture and huge volume of exportable cargo.

Similarly, AirBlue and Shaheen International have also showed interest in operating flights from Sialkot airport and negotiations were underway between SIAL and the airlines, he added.

Khawar Anwar Khawaja added that Chairman Central Board of Revenue (CBR) had exempted SIAL from withholding tax and assured to provide necessary staff for the Sialkot airport. He said 37 KM long Sialkot-Wazirabad road would be completed by June this year which would not only help in handling speedy cargo from Sialkot Dry Port but also supportive in providing easy approach to the passengers for airport.

Chairman, SIAL, Baber Iqbal said strenuous efforts are being made for the completion of this mega project at the earliest. He said regular functioning of the airport would pave the way for opening new vista of development and increasing the export volume besides creating employment opportunities for the skilled and educated persons of the area.

General Manager, APA, Pervez Ansari lauded the role of business community of Sialkot for undertaking the mega project of Sialkot on self-help basis. He said APA will take all possible step for operating cargo and passenger flights from Sialkot Airport. It may be mentioned that Sialkot International Airport would be accomplished costing Rs. two billion.

It may be pointed out that Sialkot airport would have the country’s longest runway measuring 3.6 KM and which provide landing and take off facilities to Boeing 747 and other aircrafts.

According to a rough estimate 60 percent of aircraft movement will be for domestic while 40 percent will be for the international carriers.
