PIA to induct two Boeing 777-200LRs early next year

KARACHI (October 20 2005): The national carrier, Pakistan International Airlines, will join quality airlines of the world with the induction of two of the world's longest-range jetliners, Boeing 777-200LRs world-liners in its fleet early next year.
The first jetliner would join in January and the second in February 2006, a PIA spokesman told the Business Recorder here on Wednesday.
The induction of these aircraft would give PIA an edge over the three private carriers, which have also been allowed to operate on foreign routes.
Aviation experts are of the opinion that these airlines neither pose any immediate threat nor are regarded a future threat to the PIA's domestic and foreign operations. Some of the bold decisions taken during the last few months by the PIA management had brought positive gains in the shape of augmenting the revenues and seat occupancy, he said.
Although the private airlines had tried all the tricks of the trade, particularly offering big discounts in fares to corner the PIA, nothing worked their way as the PIA responded gleefully to meet the challenge thrown by the "babes" by slashing their fares.
It was not a roughshod decision but the fare package offered on domestic routes was done after a lot of hard work and calculations by the professionals, starting right from the Chairman to Deputy Managing Director and Director, Marketing.
The spokesman said previously a few seats remained vacant, but now it was difficult to find seats on any flight to Lahore or Islamabad, adding a slight reduction in fares had brought all the difference.
It was better to earn some money than to leave the seats unoccupied on flights, he said, adding that was the logic governing the reduction in fares. PIA Chairman Tariq Kirmani, he said, was laying great emphasis on marketing to improve the financial health of the airline and on passenger convenience, and comfort to improve the airlines image among the travelling public.
With Deputy Managing Director Farooque Shah a product of Marketing Department and Director Marketing Kamran Hasan who had worked with dedication on PIA's fleet expansion plan, it should not be difficult to achieve the targets set by the Chairman, he said.
The PIA had purchased eight new Boeing 777 aeroplanes under a definitive agreement signed with the Boeing Company at the PIA head office here in October 2002. The agreement had included three Boeing 777-200ER which are already flying with PIA, two Boeing 777-200LR scheduled to join early next year and another three Boeing 777-200ER which would be delivered by 2008. All the jetliners would be used on PIA's long haul routes.
These hi-tech aircraft of Boeing 777 family are powered with GE90-115B engines. General Electric Aircraft Engine is the sole producer of engines for the Boeing 777-200LR worldliner and Boeing 777-300ER airplanes.
The PIA would continue to induct new technology aircraft on a regular basis in the next decade in two segments (long haul and regional). With the implementation of fleet replacement plan, the PIA shall have a modern fleet of aircraft with an average age of 12 years, as against the present 23 years. The national carrier shall then be in a position to match the product of any competitor.
The 777-200LR worldliner can connect virtually any two cities on the planet. Its extended-range capability will allow airlines to service such non-stop routes as Dubai and Los Angeles, New York and Singapore, Sydney and Paris, Karachi and Houston at full, 301 passenger capacity and carrying revenue cargo.
With a range of 9,420 nautical miles (17,446 kilometres), it will carry more passengers and more revenue cargo farther than any other jetliner.
The worldliner offers overhead crew and attendant rest areas in the fuselage crown above the passenger cabin, freeing space for either four to seven revenue passenger seats or up to six LD-3 cargo containers.
The 777-200LR particularly compliments the popular 777-200ER. On long-range routes served by the 777-200ER, the 777-200LR provides a full cargo payload enhancement - an additional 53,100 pounds of revenue cargo capability.

Just like Emirates launched the A380, but SIA will be the first operator

If you watch the event of the 777-200LR rollout ceremony, she stated that PIA would be the first to operate it.
Fact is, EVA Air is the customer that got the 777-200LR programme started with its order in June 2000 for 3 airplanes.
Same as what I said about EK- EK launched the A380 programme, yet its SIA who takes first delivery and operates it FIRST before EK late next year

Heres the video, and pay attention to what said by the PIA representative

Yes, AP-BGL i am in favour of a change for the livery but only the tail. The only thing that makes this livery full would be an eye-catching tail, which i feel has no imagination. Though, as we have no idea what the tail designs are, I could be against that as well, oh well....who knows ??
That lady is actually one of the board of directors for PIA and is called Dr. Sughra Junejo.
Eva Air indeed was the launch customer for the Boeing 777-200LR variant, but due to lack of funds and orders the aircraft was shelved and Eva Air was likely to remove the order, but in 2002 PIA placed 2 more orders to make the orders up to five. This allowed the Boeing Company to restarted the project, thanks to PK. Soon, more airlines such as AI, Air Canada, Jet Airways and Qatar Airways placed more orders in the following years. As PIA was the first airline airline to invest in the aircraft and restart the project the Boeing company made PIA the launch customer and gave them the priorty to get the first two aircrafts....
