This is hilarious-ha ha ha! PIA's new year's resolution: make its air hostesses petit. Perhaps a more daunting task than reviving the whole airline operations.

PIA decisions are taken by half-half by CEO and Supreme court both of which have no expertise in running acommercial airline. No wonder , a large number of seasoned employees have left or are leaving PIA to serve in international airlines particularly in Middle East.

Around 100 -- just over 5% -- of the crew would need to lose weight by July 1 to avoid grounding, Mashhood Tajwar, a PIA spokesman, told CNN.

Tajwar described the crackdown on overweight flight crew as a "regular, routine matter," and suggested that the memo was issued as standards for weight had lapsed over time, and was issued to ensure that the flight attendants were "slim, smart and fit."

"No one would like to have shabby crew in the aircraft," he said, adding that the airline had received complaints about "obese" flight attendants, but did not elaborate on how many passengers had taken issue with their cabin crews' appearances.

He said that the initiative was put in place for reasons of "both" appearance and health, and insisted that PIA was not alone in insisting their cabin crews hit weight targets.

I flew Thomas Cook and Jet2.com in the past two months (to resort destinations) and was surprised to see how big some of the flight attendants were. For at least 3 of them across the 4 flights, I am sure their BMI would rank them obese. However as long as they can perform the emergency drills and passenger safety is not compromised, what is the problem?

I am surprised to hear customer complaints? The days of where cabin crew were to look like models have long gone. They are their for passenger safety, not eye candy on the flight!

PIA considers offloading overweight cabin crew from int’l flights

KARACHI:
The Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) management is considering a proposal to offload its overweight flight attendants from international flights.

With four days remaining in the deadline set for overweight cabin crew to shed body weight, PIA Flight Service General Manager Amir Bashir sought details about all such employees.

Besides, the national flag carrier is considering offloading flight attendants with excessive weight from international flights, according to sources privy to this development.

Earlier, on Jan 1, the PIA in an effort to improve its performance issued a memo, directing 1,800 flight attendants to lose weight up to the desired standard set by its management or face being grounded.

The PIA administration announced to gradually reduce waiver of 30 lbs (pounds) excess weight to zero lbs in upcoming months for the cabin crew.

“If any crew found above 30 lbs from the desired weight after 31st Jan, 2019, will be grounded and referred to Air Crew Medical Center for medical evaluation & treatment until weight is reduced up to desired standard/BMI,” the notification read.

The weight check of all the cabin crew will be carried out at their base stations, it added.

Earlier this week, in a move to end political influence from the organisation, the PIA issued a circular, barring employees from doing so in service related matters.

“It is being observed that some of the employees are asserting political pressure for their transfer, postings and other service related matters, which is clear violation of the code of the conduct”, the notification issued from the office of the HR head reads.

Sherry Rehman tells PIA to focus on routes, not ‘crew waistline’

The Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) management is considering a proposal to offload its overweight flight attendants from international flights.

With four days remaining in the deadline set for overweight cabin crew to shed body weight, PIA Flight Service General Manager Amir Bashir sought details about all such employees.

Responding to news that PIA is considering offloading “overweight flight hostesses”, former senator and Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leader Sherry Rehman wrote that she “will bring this gross sexism up in the Civil Aviation Committee of Senate”.

“Suddenly we are hearing constantly about female cabin crew needing to look like models. [It is] time to focus on BIG structural, safety and business issues. PIA routes and fleets are important, not crew waistline,” she condemned.

Lawyer and activist Iman Zainab Mazari wrote that “PIA’s problem is not that it’s air stewardesses are ‘unattractive’ but that incompetent men heading the airline, lacking vision and commitment have made decisions to run the airline like a bharti brigade.”

Journalist Raza Rumi wrote that when the national flag carrier wanted to fire aging air hostesses, the late Asma Jahangir fought the case against such acts of discrimination and the move was reversed.

“It is at such junctures one wishes she had not left us so early,” he lamented.

Last week, PIA caught flak when it announced that it will stop playing soft music during its flights and instead Qaseeda Burda Sharif (an ode of praise for the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) will be played.

The decision was taken under directives of PIA Chairman Air Marshal Arshad Malik.
