Former Chairman PIA Chaudhry Ahmad Saeed Passes Away

Former Chairman PIA Chaudhry Ahmad Saeed has passed away. His body will be flown from Karachi to Lahore by a PIA flight.

Funeral prayers will be offered at Forman Christian (FC) College ground in Lahore at 4:00 PM on September 29.

PIA placed order for eight brand new Boeing 777s in November 2002 when Mr. Saeed was serving the airline as its Managing Director. PIA inducted its first Boeing 777 in January 2004 when he was airline's Chairman.

PIA also earned profit for the last time in 2004 under his chairmanship.

Very sad to listen this news.

He was the one who were able to to deal with Boeing for 8 - 777's, and able to arrange Loan for PIA, despite very weak PIA financial health.

Bringing brand new 777 was the best decision by PIA, At that time A340 with 4 engine was the B-777 competitor and Airbus pitch very good deal to PIA, but he and his team opted for 777, and it turns out to be the best decision for PIA and to date PIA is surviving because of these 777's.

LAHORE: Former PIA Managing Director/Chairman Chaudhry Ahmad Saeed died on Friday. He was around 80.

Tahir Khaliq, a friend of Saeed family, told DAWN that Mr Saeed died of cancer in a private hospital of Karachi.

He said he was battling with throat cancer for quite sometime. Recently he was shifted to Karachi from Lahore for treatment, he said.

A PIA spokesperson said Mr Saeed's casket would be flown to Lahore by a PIA flight on Saturday morning. He said the funeral prayers would be held on Saturday at 4:00 PM in FC College ground.

Mr. Saeed remained MD PIA (2001-03) and Chairman (2003-05) during the Musharraf regime. He was the brother of former Defence Minister Ahmad Mukhtar.

To put the facts in correct perspective, decision to purchase 08 B-777 from Boeing was the result of US decision to grant 1.5 billion $ loan by Eximp Bank to finance its purchase. Eximp Bank loans are conditional on purchase of US goods only. In fact this loan was the first handout after 9/11 to Pakistan for joining US war on terror.
