Engineers Refuse To Clear Aircraft, Return Of 3,000 Hajis Jeopardized

Shaheen Air About to File Bankruptcy

By Nasir Mahmood

KARACHI:
The management of Shaheen Air Intl instead of clearing its debts of Rs.16 billion has decided to file bankruptcy on October 1st after 22 years of serving Pakistani skies. It’s a huge loss for Pakistan Aviation. Now the competition remains between Serene Air, Air blue and the national carrier Pakistan International Airlines.

According to reliable sources they have only one aircraft which is planned to give back to leaser on 1st October. There were rumors in market that they were selling the airline but future looks dark for this airline. On the other hand Pakistan aviation sector has no jobs.

The Airline has defaulted about Rupees 16 billion not only to FBR, CAA and Leasers but also the employees’ salaries for almost 2 months’ i.e., July and August 2018 along with flight kitchen, catering transporters and vendors.

There were 65 Aircraft Engineers, 400 Aircraft Technicians, 400 Cabin crew and almost 50 Pilots. The ground staff belonging to sales and accounts department is estimated at 3,000 members, all without salaries.

According to informed sources almost 3000 govt. scheme Hajis are yet to be brought back by SIA from Madina through a total of 11 flights out of which 5 were due from Karachi from 21st September. Those Hajis are to be brought by the only aircraft of the airline A-330.

Only A-330 authorized engineers can release this aircraft for flight. However, all the engineers are united not to release this aircraft due to non-payment of salaries. Engineers of this Aircraft A-330 and pilots are united not to fly or release to service this aircraft for hajj flights. This might be a serious human factor. This is a big safety hazard to work in stress because of careers and back salaries issue.

Talking to ‘National Courier’ one of the engineers disclosed that he was getting Rs 319,000 salary now the SIA management has reduced it to Rs 90,000 but even then not paying since July 2018. “I have 6 type of aircraft License endorsed but no jobs in market, SIA higher management does not say anything to us no response. We all employees sitting at home hopeless,” he said. There are no jobs in Pakistan market, aviation industry has been shrinking. “We don’t have any option except to do odd jobs to run homes,” he added.

Apparently the aircraft is Shaheen Air Airbus A330-200 registration AP-BMI that was last seen active as Medina to Karachi flight NL-706 on September 5.

According to SAMAA News channel:

* Shaheen Air employees including pilots on strike fear that the airline will leave them without payment of salaries after getting post-Hajj flights operations completed.

* The issue will be resolved soon, says Shaheen Air spokesperson.

Unpaid pilots and aircraft engineers of Shaheen Air go on strike.

Part of a letter by Shaheen Air employees written to airline's management:

"With deep regret it is to bring into your knowledge that we have been waiting for our salaries from more than two months. But no salary received yet. We have to support our families and we have taken loans to support but now no body is cooperating with us. Shaheen Air International (SAI) flight operations will not dispatch any single flight (i.e. post-Hajj flight, upcoming first flight on September 21), until our all dues are cleared till date."

Unpaid Shaheen Air pilots refuse to fly Hajj pilgrims back home

SEPTEMBER 21, 2018
Shaheen Air International’s Hajj operations have been suspended again after its engineers, pilots and other staff went on strike for not being paid.

A flight was to leave for Medina to take 300 Hajj pilgrims back to Karachi in the morning but it could not leave the hanger owing to the strike.

From September 20-25, at least 17 Shaheen Air International flights are schedules to fly for Saudi Arabia to pick the Hajj pilgrims. Over 3,000 pilgrims could be affected if Shaheen Air International’s Hajj operations are not resumed.
