When PIA started carrying Human Remains (dead bodies) for free to Pakistan, many said PIA will losr a lot of cargo revenue. What actually happened was that everyone in UK started bringing their dead bodies to Pakistan for burial and PIA sold a lot of tickets to friends and relatives of the deceased. Denying discount to disabled is not going to increase PK revenues by a pemny.

Why should anyone get a discounted ticket?????

Senior citizens, or special people, or journalist or armed forces nobody nobody should get discounted fares.

I just paid 20,800 on Shaheen for a flight Lahore-Karachi-Lahore on traveling on February 2. PIA fare was 38,000.

When you hand out free and discounted tickets eventually someone has to pay, whether its passengers who opted for Shaheen and PIA flies an empty seat or its the tax payers who pay 40 billion a year to PIA in subsidies.

PIA needs to clean up its act or close shop.

Most unprofessional bunch of idiots working in the airline.

Have to differ with you sir. Most people in PIA are professional and honest. PIA employees established Enirates in 1985. I know that fir a fact. With yield management everyone knows Airlines will try to optimize their revenues. The cheaper or discounted tickets or airmiles tickets are booked in the lowest RBDs and that is the purpose of revenue management.
Remember the PIA Ad with the line "who taught others to fly". Or are yiu saying that emplotees of 70s and 80s were outstanding but the present ones are no good?
Its not the employees stupid. Its the owners who have sold out airlines interests for their personal gains.

PIA withdraws discounts meant for senior citizens, differently-abled passengers

By Usman Hanif

Published: February 1, 2018

KARACHI:
Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has withdrawn substantial discounts of up to 40% meant for senior citizens, students and differently-abled passengers on air fares in a bid to streamline its revenues.

PIA offered fare discounts of 20% to senior citizens, aged 65 or above, on flights from and to the UK, Ireland, the US, Canada, Europe and Asia. It has also withdrawn discounts for domestic flights in economy, economy plus, and business class segments.

The national airline also ended the 40% discount offer for differently-abled passengers, and their attendants on flights from Bombay, Delhi, Dhaka and Kabul to Pakistan.

The move comes as PIA desperately looks at avenues to cut its losses that have soared beyond Rs319.10 billion in the quarter ended March 2017.

“A great portion of our revenue was being disturbed by the discounts,” the PIA spokesperson told The Express Tribune. “It is not common practice in the aviation industry [to offer such discounts] and we were an exception,” he added.

PIA earned a revenue of Rs24.61 billion in the January-March quarter of 2017, compared to Rs24.76 billion in the same quarter of the previous year.

The revenue, however, failed to translate into profit mainly due to much higher cost of services (fuel and other costs) at Rs27.78 billion as opposed to Rs23.07 billion in the corresponding period of the previous year.

“The new revenue management system already gives discounts and ticket fares fluctuate with the quantum of traffic, unlike in the past when one fair was declared for the whole year irrespective of the season,” he said.
