Senate Informed About Number of Pilots Working for PIA & Number of Airline's Operational Aircraft

Post by Abbas Ali »

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – Senate was told on Tuesday that Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has a total number of 32 airplanes of which only 27 are operational, reported Dunya News.

For these aircraft, PIA has employed 458 regular pilots and 20 cadet pilots, while 28 pilots are on contracts. Having said that, 17 senior pilots are positioned at executive duties in the airline company.

In this way, PIA has a total number of 522 pilots on duty to fly just 32 airplanes.

Federal Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Sheikh Aftab revealed in Senate that instead of buying new planes, PIA has issued a tender notice in order to buy four wide-body aircraft and four narrow-body aircraft.

Meanwhile, chairman Senate Raza Rabbani has personally summoned Aviation Secretary for spreading misinformation about suspension of salaries of aviation employees.

 If one excludes those at executive positions, it turns out to be 13 pilots per aircraft. I know this is a rough figure that needs more detailing & classification per type, but this is just too ridiculous. How did airline end up with so many surplus pilots ?

12 to 16 Pilot per Aircraft is industry average. Nothing wrong with this figure.

some while ago i read, 8 sets of crew per aircraft is standard/average in market so i don't think that the number of pilots in PIA is higher than the standard/average figure :-k

btw, another test going to happen for selection of cadet pilots in coming 2-3 days, good luck to all applicants wishing to be part of PIA

Did he mean lease or does PIA want to buy 8 new planes?

^ Lease, according to PTV News.

And, I think it's wet lease of four narrow-body and dry lease of four narrow-body.

I am not sure about the exact figure but PIA have almost 450 pilots but that includes Pilots on Contract as well well as on Management Positions

So basically re-affirming the already published news? Or is this going to be a further addition to the leased fleet?

^ I think the minister was talking about induction of four wet leased narrow-body and four dry leased narrow body aircraft under a tender notice issued by the airline in October last year. Two wet leased Pegasus Airlines Boeing 737-800s recently inducted under that tender (viewtopic.php?f=1&t=24815)
