PIA Boeing 777 Gets Hit by Jet Bridge at Karachi Airport

Post by Abbas Ali »

According to news sources, a PIA Boeing 777 was struck by a boarding bridge at Karachi Airport after completing flight from Toronto. Passengers disembarked from rear door through mobile stairs.

Probably flight PK-782 from Toronto to Karachi via Islamabad performed by PIA Boeing 777-240LR registration AP-BGY.

PK-782 arrived at Karachi Airport at 11:52 PM on March 25.

The aircraft is grounded and blood samples of pilot sent for medical tests.

Due to unavailability of this Boeing 777, PIA flights PK-312 from Karachi to Lahore and PK-247 from Lahore to Dammam are delayed.

Express News channel in its report showed this photo of a PIA Boeing 777 at Karachi Airport.

According to news report on following link, an engine of the aircraft was damaged. Probably engine cowling?

According to Geo News:

Chairman PIA has ordered an inquiry.

The aircraft has been repaired.

Results of pilot's blood samples and other tests will be made available to Pakistan CAA in next two days. Taking blood samples and other medical tests are part of CAA investigation of the incident.

Pilot's breath test was negative, according to Express News channel.

From news reports, it seems one of the engines (left engine / engine number one?) struck some object when the aircraft was taxiing towards parking bay/boarding bridge.

After repairs, AP-BGY departed from Karachi at 10:15 AM as flight PK-312 to Lahore where it landed at 11:32 AM. PK-312 was scheduled to land at Lahore at 12:45 AM and it means the flight suffered delay of nearly eleven hours.

From Lahore, AP-BGY departed at 1:54 PM as flight PK-247 to Dammam. PK-247 was scheduled to depart at 12:05 AM and it means the flight suffered delay of nearly fourteen hours.

I saw on this morning TV news (i cannot remember the channel name)that passengers due to leave for Lahore on PK 312 protested due to non- availability of an aircraft to take them to Lahore. They wanted to board the next flight to Lahore but were not allowed (obviously others were all ready booked on it). This resulted in delay in this next flight as well.

As far as breathalyser and blood test results are concerned CAA should receive them first before the media. Also if the Jet bridge hit the 777, then should not the bridge operator also be under full scrutiny? The bridge only starts to move into position after the aircraft has come to rest at the designated stand position.

Finally PK 248 AP-BGY has landed at Lahore and will now operate PK 7543 with a delay of almost 8 hours.
