Security at Pakistani airports in light of matters in Egypt

Post by t_kaay »

So as it becomes apparent that the crash of the airliner in Egypt was caused by a bomb, news is coming out of serious security lapses at Sharm Airport. Upon reading these accounts, one can relate to similar lapses that occur daily at our very own Islamabad airport. Paying to have your baggage whisked through without searching, bribing staff to check in bags that are overweight, paying off narcotics and customs officials, it all happens at Islamabad on a daily basis.

In light of the probability that airport security around the world will now be under review, do you think habits of staff at Islamabad can be changed and if not, will it take a major airline to pull out or a ban for airlines operating out of inadequate airports to make them change?

I use Islamabad in my post as it is the one I have experienced and witnessed these lapses at, but no doubt the other Pakistani airports will be the same.

There is nothing definitive/ or definitive made known so far despite the availability of both the recorders. It is still anybody's guess what brought that airliner down. Only a forensic examination will reveal the presence of explosive.
From what has been reported in the media: the Russian co-pilot's wife attributed to him a concern on the condition of the aircraft. This aircraft in 2001 had suffered a tail strike while landing. A similar incident of tail strike and later repair and flight caused a JAL B747 to go down in Japan a few years back-the aircraft was flying with the vertical tail lost in an explosive decompression. There have been numerous cases of explosive decompression (depressurization) the world over, mostly fatal but non-fatal also. It goes off like a bomb also. PIA also suffered an incident with its A300. The security at Sharm-al-Shaikh would have been tight.

Aren't those Pakistani airports corruption stories/videos limited to passengers avoiding customs inspection or extra baggage charges by bribing customs officials and airline staff after their baggage has gone through screening process?

Or are passengers also managing to avoid passage of their baggage through scanning machines and passenger body search/scanning process by offering bribes to security personnel deputed at the airport? I think they cannot avoid screening process.

Security in airline catering, cargo section/area of the airport etc. should be tightly monitored/checked.

Last incident of aircraft hijacking happened in Pakistan more than seventeen years ago in 1998. Apparently Airports Security Force (ASF) doing well to prevent act of terrorism aboard aircraft departing from Pakistan.

Airline flying out of Pakistan airports would have ceased if the security was breached at the level imagined. Minor violations of custom regulations and narcotics carrying will continue periodically. Some like the big political case making headlines a few months (Ayyan Ali) cannot be checked unless the clean up which is ongoing goes through all its motions.
