The helicopter crashed on a school, according to some news sources.

The ill-fated helicopter was one of three Mi-17 helicopters flying to Gilgit. One of the helicopters was carrying media personnel.

In another aircraft or helicopter, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif was also flying to Gilgit.

The aircraft/helicopter carrying prime minister returned to Islamabad upon getting information about the crash.

A ceremony was going to be held for opening of chairlifts terminal(s) at or near Gilgit.

From Islamabad flown on ATR to Gilgit , 4 Helicopters were to take a 57 member delegation to Naltar from gilgit but because of technical fault on one helicopters 3 were used , Delegation was distributed in 4 groups and 1 group went when everyon was gone because they had to wait for 1 helicopter to return back and take them.

Some accounts reveal while landing in a confined area the the tail rotor engaged tall trees surrounding the helipad, thereafter the the helicopter lost directional control, spun few times before crashing into the school building.

Aerial view of the crash site.

Image
The circle behind trees is probably a makeshift helipad. Also note text 'Army Public School' created with stones near the burning building where the helicopter crashed. A makeshift helipad is partially visible behind rising black smoke. Fallen trees can be seen near crash site and probably those trees were struck by tail section/rotor of the helicopter?

A makeshift helipad clearly visible near fallen trees and burning building where the helicopter crashed.

Or maybe those trees were cut when makeshift helipads were made?

A tree appears cut apparently with a machine; probably it was cut when the makeshift helipad was prepared.

The Mi-17 helicopter experienced technical problem and became uncontrollable just before landing, according to news reports. It went up & down making circles in the air before crashing into the ground.

The crashed helicopter was in service with Pakistan Army since year 2002.
