What about PIA order for Five Boeing 777-300ER Aircraft?

Post by ammad »

PIA did order like 5 B777-300 ER in early days of 2012, and it's now almost 2 and half year being passed, wondering is there any update on this.

As far as I know, the current government also approved acquisition of those five brand new Boeing 777-300ER aircraft.

All five aircraft will be delivered to PIA in year 2015.

I think information like construction numbers of these B777s will become available in the beginning of 2015 weeks or some months before aircraft assembly process.

According to old news reports, the delivery of five brand new dry leased Boeing 777-300ER aircraft to PIA will begin in March 2015 and be completed in November 2015.

As per Boeing official website, PIA B777's no where exist in current year's (2015) Orders and Deliveries List, even no B777 order(s) shown in "Unidentified Customer(s)" category.

I read somewhere on forum that PIA wanted to replace the order with 787, but Boeing denied that. I think maybe because 787 is in high demand and Boeing wants 777 to continue rolling until next version.

But why doesn't PIA replace it with 747-8i? It is struggling to sell and PIA can manage to get these in 2017 too (considering backlog is quite small). It certainly looks better than 777-300ER.

The only bad thing about it I think is that PIA doesn't want to operate 4 engine aircraft and also having 10 777-300ER, instead of 5 747 and 5 777, it can save on maintenance, training, spare engines/other stuff. Also 777 is cheaper to operate if 747 cannot operate at near full capacity.

The good thing though is, PIA can maybe get a good deal by switching to it, considering Boeing wants to sell it. Also it can carry more people, so <5 747s flying during Hajj time will be sufficient. Also we can use it on some heavy routes, like London which people love to fly with Emirates A380s. Or they can use some space for cargo.

Yeah.

You don't know how to read the 'orders and deliveries' subsection. You forgot to include this bit:

'this chart includes both gross and net total orders for the current year.

'

Boeing wouldn't deny a conversion.

They don't want to lose customers, even low tier ones like PIA.

PIA has already put money towards Boeing 777 plane, so they can't back out now (Boeing will have money in pocket), unless the terms allowed conversions, which I believe doesn't. Also some member said PIA wanted to switch to 787 but it was denied. In this case, it is up to Boeing (as both parties will agree to it) if it will allow PIA to switch orders.

Lets be honest, PIA would love to have 7 787s instead of 5 777s. The 787 wil be quite useful for trips to Europe, mid east and Asia pacific. We already got like 10~ 777s. What we need is 787/a330s to replace the a310s and other routes best served by mid range crafts. Since we can't have 787, I think 747 can be good switch instead.

Since 747 isn't the best seller, perhaps boeing can make exception/concession.

I think they can start earning money just by laying off employees and other good things. This will drive PIA stocks and give it funds to buy more planes.

Air Canada had a lot of problems with money too. Their share was <$1. After they fixed it, within 3 years its now valued at >$12.

No chance of NEW aircraft induction.

PIA to acquire 12 planes on dry lease.

ISLAMABAD: The Senate was informed on Thursday that the national flag carrier would soon be acquiring 12 aircraft on dry lease.

Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Sheikh Aftab Ahmad told the house that nine A320 narrow-body, short-to-medium-haul jet airliners and three ATR-72 twin-engine, turboprop, short-haul regional aircraft would be acquired.

The Pakistan International Airlines had no plans to purchase new aircraft, he said, adding that it had acquired 13 aircraft on wet lease and six on dry lease since March 2014. At present, four A320 and two ATR-72 planes acquired on dry lease were in operation.

The minister said a wet lease was an arrangement under which a company provided an aircraft along with crew, maintenance and insurance and the payment made was calculated on hours operated. It usually is a short-term arrangement.

A dry lease is an arrangement whereby an aircraft is provided without crew, maintenance and insurance to an airline on payment to be made on monthly or yearly basis. It is usually a long-term arrangement.

Thirteen aircraft had been obtained on wet lease between March and November 2014 to meet short-term capacity requirement of PIA, he said.

They were returned on completion of the lease term this month. Two of these planes were returned on May 13.

Answering a question, Sheikh Aftab said the profit and loss account for the period ending on June 2014 showed reduction in losses of the PIA to the tune of Rs8.25 billion when compared to the corresponding period of 2013. The PIA earned an operational profit of Rs2.14bn in the first quarter of 2015.
