Since I live close to Peshawar Airport, let me write what actually happened, because I have seen that many media details are wrong. First of all, the aircraft was not fired from Tehkal side of Runway 17, because runway 17 only allows Visual Approach landings and there are no landing aids instaled at this end which is just adjacent to main Jamrud Road. All night landings at PEW take place at Runway 35 which is also known as Pishtkhra end. All flights to PEW make a circle to land approach, after touching VOR Peshawar. The circling area, to land takes aircraft down to 1500 feet level. From this point, as it lowers its landing gears, it passes over Kohat Road, Shamshatoo refugee Camp, Badaber Village As it moves for short finals, it passes over part of Bara Tehsil of Khyber Agency, Sarband area, before touching down at Runway 35.

The aircraft was fired exactly at the spot which is boundary of Sarband area with Bara tehsil of Khyber Agency. While landing one can closely view the Bara bazaar and Bara Fort. This area since long is commanded by henchmen of warlord Mangal Bagh. Mangal bagh is a truck cleaner turned terrorist who for some time also had the favour of establishment. He ihas been responsible for lots of bombings in and around Peshawar. Not very long ago, his men had also fired on a Cessna 172 dropping leaflets in the area.

This area has always been a dens of outlaws and the security forces had always turned a blind eye towards this troubled spot. Many locals are also involved in terrorism as they would anything fr money. Finally we saw the outcome in the form of firing on the PIA Airbus.

I dont think that making more checkpoints in this area will serve the purpose as they have the ability to fire rockets from nearby mountains too. The only solution is that CAA wakes up and installs landing aids at Runway 17, because the approach over Tehkal area is more safe as it is away from Tribal boundary and there are army camps in the approach pathway, which makes that approach more safer

^ Thank you Raza for sharing useful info.

I would like to add that on October 7, 2002, a pilot while flying Lahore Flying CLub (LFC) Cessna 310P (AP-AVS) also received bullet injury due to ground fire. The aircraft, flying low over Bara, Khyber Agency, was dropping election leaflets calling for support of a local candidate in October 10, 2002, elections held in Pakistan when it was hit by ground fire. The co-pilot managed to land the damaged aircraft at Peshawar Airport safely. Unfortunately, the injured pilot later died in a hospital in Peshawar.

Air Arabia (Sharjah-Peshawar-Sharjah) and Gulf Air (Bahrain-Peshawar-Bahrain) continue to operate Peshawar flights, according to a local newspaper report.

Some more info about the firing incident:
He said that the roof of a school in Suliemankhel, an area near Peshawar, was used for targeting the Airbus when it was landing at the Bacha Khan International Airport late on Tuesday night.

The school was closed for summer vacation and its watchman was absent from duty, the official said.

He said assailants had affixed an extra barrel to an AK-47 rifle to enhance its fire range and used tracer bullets to ensure that they hit the target.
