Re: PIA to Retire Boeing 747 after Hajj 2014
A friend of mine says that few days before Eid, a news channel was reporting final grounding PIA's last Boeing 747 i.e. Boeing 747-367 registration AP-BFY.

If only one cycle left then why Palpa is saying in above mention report that it should used for Hajj operation as well?Abbas Ali wrote:PIA Boeing 747-367 registration AP-BFY is unofficially grounded.

"It is also mentioned that there was no justification of grounding serviceable 500-seaters B-747 before Hajj and acquiring two 250-seater B-767s/A-330s"

PALPA doesn't care if PIA is flying 787s/A350s or 727s/747s and is billions of rupees in the red.ammad wrote:

It's in PALPA's best interest for PIA to be flying a greater number of aircraft themselves (not wet leased), even if said aircraft are dinosaurs. More planes=more pilots=more union dues.

PALPA wouldnt have made that comment if they didnt know the number of cycles remaining on the aircraft, it could be management just wants to get rid of the aircraft soo for some reason.

Have PIA Boeing 747 pilots started undergoing training to fly some other aircraft type in airline's fleet?

AP-BFY is a 28 year old 747-300.
Airlines around the world are ground 1990-92 built 747-400s.
I am sure PIA does not want to use the 747 for Hadj flights because the Saudis must have put their foot down about the reliability of AP-BFY.

BTW, permanent grounding of AP-BFY B747-3 not officially announced yet. Aircraft still exist in active fleet list as of July 2015, and it should not be considered 'permanently grounded' until removed from this list and deregistered.

Umar, you know how many cycles are left in her? If there is only one cycle left then we can call it retire, other wise it would be nice to see fly occasionally as active set of cockpit crew is still on PIA payroll. Also, i hope 747 can make it till April - 2016 to mark full 40 year of service with honor and pride.
