Pilgrims’ late arrival at Jeddah Airport causes delay in Hajj flights: PIA

ISLAMABAD, Nov 11 (APP):
A spokesman of the Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) on Friday clarified that late arrival of pilgrims at Jeddah Haj terminal caused delay in flights during post Hajj flight operation. “The Managing Director of PIA has already explained that the ‘Moalameen’ are not bringing our pilgrims on time at the Hajj terminal in Jeddah which is causing delay,” he told APP.

He said that the PIA management in collaboration with the Saudi Civil Aviation Authorities (CAA) had managed to allocate a dedicated bay for PIA Hajj flights.

This will help the PIA to process smooth handling of Hajj flights at Jeddah Hajj Terminal, he added. The spokesman said that the PIA also allotted 12 special check-in counters and three baggage and scanning belts for efficient handling of the baggage.

He said a team of senior PIA officials was also present at Jeddah Airport to facilitate the returning Hajjaj. Moreover, the PIA officials were in constant communication with the Saudi CAA for speedy security and immigration procedures.

PIA brings back 5,350 Hajis so far

November 12, 2011
- PIA post Hajj operation commenced from November 10th and has so far brought back 5,350 Hajis to Pakistan through 13 Hajj flights.

PIA spokesman said here on Friday.

The first post Hajj flight for Karachi PK 7682 carrying 455 hajjis landed at Karachi at 2:30am.

The passengers of the first Hajj flight to Karachi were received by Managing Director PIA, Nadeem Khan Yousufzai.

The passengers were presented rose garlands on their arrival at Hajj terminal Karachi.

Hajjis arriving at Lahore, Islamabad, Peshawar and Quetta were also received by PIA officials.

The delays in arrival of flights is mainly due to late arrival of passengers and their luggage at the airport which is being done by their Guide (Mualim/Maktab) who takes care of hajjis transportation from their place of stay to the airport.

Passengers of other countries and airlines are also facing similar problems.

At a time nearly 60,000 hajjis of different countries are present at Jeddah Hajj terminal for their respective flights of various airlines.

PIA spokesman said that PIA had earlier advised all hajjis to reach the airport at least 8 hours prior to their flights.

PIA senior officials are present at Jeddah Airport to facilitate the returning Hajjis.

The PIA officials are in constant communication with Jeddah CAA for speedy security and immigration procedures.

As a result, PIA has to wait for passengers who arrive in groups at Jeddah Airport before issuance of their boarding and cannot leave behind Hajjis as they reach the airport in groups travelling by buses which is arranged by their Maktab and not PIA.

The airline's spokesman asserted.

PIA spokesman said that no PIA Post Hajj flight so far, is delayed due to any technical reason.

PIA officials and aircraft are available and ready at Jeddah Airport.

However, efforts are being made for timely departures of PIA Hajj flights with the co-operation of Hajjis and their Maulim/Maktab; for reaching at the airport on time.

PIA spokesman concluded.-PR

First Hajj flight 205 pilgrim onboard lands in Quetta

QUETTA, Nov 11 (APP):
The first Hajj flight carrying 205 Hujjaj after the delay of five hour landed at Quetta International Airport on Friday. As per details, PIA’s first hajj flight PK 2804 carrying 205 pilgrims reached in Quetta. A large number of relatives and other people welcomed the Hujjaj upon their arrival from the holy journey at Quetta Airport. Delay in the flight caused inconvenience to the people who had to wait for five hours at Airport in the cold weather. PIA Balochistan chief Hakeem Shah Kakar told APP that about 16,300 pilgrims from across Balochistan were facilitated and sent Saudi Arabia for holy journey of Hajj through PIA flights.

PIA tried best to ensure their journey peaceful and avoid inconvenience during the pre-hajj operation.

He noted that during the post-hajj operation all pilgrims who traveled through PIA would be brought back thorough 80 flights.
Kakar said that directives by the PIA high-ups have been issued to extend best service to the pilgrims on their return to hometowns.
Post hajj operation would continue till 10 December, 2011, PIA provincial chief added.

Pilgrims Relatives Protest Late Arrival of Flights

PIA Says Moalams Causing Delays

ISLAMABAD:
A large number of enraged relatives of Hujjaj protested late arrival of post-Hajj flights here at Benazir Bhutto International Air Port on Friday.

First post-Hajj flight PK-2402 reached the airport five hours later and second flight PK-4732 reached seven hours late. The original time of PK-2402 was 4AM but it arrived at 9AM while second flight’s arrival time was 6AM but it reached at 12:55PM on Friday. The relatives of Hujjaj raised slogans against concerned management on the occasion.

Similarly, all other flights throughout the country including Lahore, Karachi and Peshawar reached five to seven hours late against their original time. The News learnt that people showed strong reaction at the concerned airports against mismanagement of PIA authorities. PIA Managing Director Nadeem Khan Yousafzai said that passengers faced difficulties in reaching Jeddah Airport due to clearance. PIA flights were ready at Jeddah Airport to take passengers, he said. He said that basic reason for late arrival of flights is that ‘Moalams’ were bringing Pakistani Hujjaj very late at Jeddah Airport. But, other Hujjaj would reach their concerned airports in time, he said. He also said that situation is better than that of the last year because last year flights were very late. Hujjaj, who arrived here on Friday, said that late arrival of PIA flights at Jeddah Airport caused delays.

According to news reports, on November 11, first post-Hajj flight PK-7682 for Karachi carried 455 pilgrims. And, according to Dunya News tomorrow (November 14) PK-2508 will bring 450 pilgrims to Islamabad.

Probably two Boeing 747-200s leased from Hellenic Imperial Airways are also taking part in post-Hajj flight operations ?

According to news reports, the two Boeing 747-200s leased from Hellenic Imperial Airways can accommodate close to 466 passengers.

PIA's own Boeing 747-300s taking part in Hajj operations can accommodate around 500 passengers.

Btw, local news channels continue to report long delays suffered by a number of PIA post-Hajj flights.

In case of unavailability of standby aircraft, there's also possibility that an aircraft operating a flight with a long delay will also affect schedule of next flight to be operated with same aircraft thus creating a sort of chain reaction of delayed flights.

Media has all guns blazing towards PIA and n0t asking CAA Pak, also neglecting the Poor Management of Saudi CAA and transportati0n authorities which are the r0ot cause of delays. ...planes are gr0unded for maintenance checks as per ICAO rules, and all airlines abide by them. . .n0 airline would want to c0mmit such a loss. .it seems like a targetted campaign by Zardari against PIA in order to make a successful market entry of "Air Indus" which is probably 0wned by Zardari's Sister Faryal Talpur. . .PEMRA sh0uld take n0tice of unverified news reports!!

Federal Religious Affairs Minister Khursheed Shah, who was among VIP passengers of a delayed PIA flight from Madinah to Karachi, partially also blamed slow process at Saudi airport for delays. The minister said that flights of other airlines were also facing delays at Saudi Airport.

However, some of other VIPs who arrived on PIA flight criticized the airline for mismangement.

According to PIA, the Hajj flights are delayed due to factors like late transportation of passengers or their luggage to Jeddah Airport Terminal.

Meanwhile, a passenger of PIA post-Hajj flight PK-2010 to Karachi has died at Jeddah Airport. The body of dead male passenger, who was travelling alone, is now in custody of Saudi Authorities and they will contact Pakistani embassy staff, according to news sources.

Hajj Flights of Various Airlines Facing Delays at Jeddah Airport

Lahore, November 15, 2011:
Thirteen Airlines including PIA operating from Jeddah Hajj terminal on Post Hajj departures of Hajjis to different countries are facing six to eight hours of flight delays due to inherent infrastructure constraints at Jeddah Hajj terminal which is beyond the control of PIA. PIA Spokesman said here on Tuesday.

According to a detailed performance report (Saudi Ground Services - SGS) : Daily Hajj flight Handling Report 1410Hijri/ 2011, Jeddah) at the Jeddah Hajj terminal; airlines from Afghanistan, Iran, Turkey, Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and Middle Eastern countries have faced flight delays ranging from 2 to 11 hours.

Major Airlines operating just single flights have also experienced delays of 2 to 6 hours while PIA operates about 11 flights daily and the recorded average delay in departures is 5 hours, Indonesian Airline operates 8 flights per day and has experienced 5 hours delay, Turkish Airlines 4 flights have been facing average of 3 hours delay, Iranian Airlines 3 flights 9 to 11 hours delay.

PIA spokesman explained that Hujjaj on Hajj visa from Pakistan, on arrival at Jeddah Airport as per Saudi laws are taken over by the Moallims of their assigned Maktab who take custody of the traveling documents, personal belongings and their movement is restricted specifically according to the schedule laid out by the Moallims throughout the Hajj until departure from Jeddah.

He further said that for passengers Check-in and Baggage acceptance, immigration and security of 500 passengers at a time requires at least 6 to 8 hours. Repeatedly PIA has requested that returning Hujjaj may be brought to the airport for departure at least 8 hours before the departure time but they are being brought 2 to 3 hours before the flight since the passengers and their luggage arrive in separate vehicles, most of the time the luggage arrive very late and PIA flights cannot leave without completing the process.

Another cause of delays are fulfilling of immigration formalities and security checks. There are about 14 security checks at the terminal which takes almost 10 to 15 minutes per passenger to clear the immigration and security. Between 80,000 to 100,000 passengers have to clear the immigration and security process which results in congestion resulting in flight delays.

PIA had, in March 2011 conducted series of meetings with Saudi Airport Authorities and requested them for processing of Hajj flights on West Terminal (which is less congested), extension of Boarding lounges, establishment of security counters outside terminal building, increasing the number of counters for security checks, allowing individual processing through immigration instead of group processing because in group processing the whole group has to be complete in numbers otherwise the Saudi officials do not allow immigration and security clearance, which is the main reason for delays.

PIA on the first day of Post Hajj departure faced delay on PK 2502 to Islamabad, as about 100 passengers had not reported till the departure time, similarly on the second flight PK 2102 for Peshawar baggage of about 150 passengers arrived 2 hours after departure time. The delay of these 2 initial flights which was beyond the control of PIA proved detrimental for the subsequent flights and a rolling delay was set in for the remaining flights which the PIA is trying to overcome as soon as possible with the support of Saudi officials.

Besides, PIA is facilitating Hujjaj at the Jeddah Hajj terminal and a team of senior officials remain deputed 24 hours at the terminal to guide the Hujjaj. Electronic flight information display is installed at the check–in area where update information about flight departures is displayed. PIA employees working at Hajj terminal are distinguished wearing florescent jackets with large marking “ON PIA DUTY”, for assistance. Hujajj are also served meals at Hajj Terminal by PIA regularly. However, the displeasure on insufficient seating arrangement at Hajj terminal is beyond the control of PIA as facilities at the terminal are the responsibilities of the Local Civil Aviation –Jeddah. PIA spokesman concluded.

In November 14, 2011, Geo News report about PIA post-Hajj flight delays, Managing Director PIA Capt. Nadeem Khan Yousafzai said that in the past pilgrims traveled on foot or camels and now they travel by aircraft, return home quickly and for this they should be thankful to God.

Here's Geo News report.

This statement by MD PIA also came under discussion in November 15 session of National Assembly in Islamabad where PIA Hajj flight delays was discussed by parliamentarians.

Urdu daily 'Nawa-i-Waqt' November 15 edition also carried this report about MD PIA statement.
