CAA Notice for Disposal of AeroAsia Rombac 1-11-561RC Jets

Post by Abbas Ali »

Finally, Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has issued notice for the disposal of three Bucuresti Rombac 1-11-561RC One-Eleven (AP-BFD, AP-BFE & AP-BFF) aircraft of Aero Asia that remained parked at Jinnah International Air Port (JIAP), Karachi, since past years.

Final Notice for Disposal of Three Unserviceable BAC 1-11 Aircraft of AeroAsia airlines registration no. AP-BFF, AP-BFE & AP-BFD parked at JIAP, Karachi.

M/s AeroAsia airlines had stopped operating its three unserviceable BAC 1-11 aircraft reg. no. AP-BFF, AP-BFE & AP-BFD in 2000. Since then the aircraft are parked at Jinnah Interational Air Port (JIAP), Karachi. These aircraft have been deregistered by CAA Pakistan since 27th May 2004. The subject unserviceable/un-worthy aircraft are required to be removed to overcome the parking constraints at JIAP, Karachi, and to clear the obstruction/hazard from the aircraft parking area.

In this regard airport managment JIAP has served three notices to m/s AeroAsia in year 2009. Subsequently, a final notice followed by reminder has also been served in year 2009. No response from AeroAsia has been received so far.

Through this notice AeroAsia are advised in their own interest to make arrangements for payment of dues to CAA against parking and housing charges and remove the aforesaid aircraft from JIAP premises within 15 days of the publication of this notice, failing which Civil Aviation Authority would proceed for disposal/removal of the aircraft solely at the entire risk and cost of m/s AeroAsia. No claim or objection whatsoever in this behalf would be entertained by CAA subsequently.

Pakistan CAA noticed published in today's (April 4) newspaper.

Post by Abbas Ali »

The three grounded AeroAsia Rombac 1-11-561RC aircraft (AP-BFD, AP-BFE and AP-BFF) can seen stored at Jinnah International Air Port (JIAP), Karachi, in following photo taken on May 19, 2009.

A notice for the sale/scrapping of these three aircraft should appear in newspapers in coming weeks in case of no response from AeroAsia to final notice issued by CAA. The sale/scrapping of these aircraft will also allow CAA to recover some of the amount due to be paid by AeroAsia.

Btw, these AeroAsia aircraft were built in Romania under designation Rombac 1-11 under licence from British Aircraft Corporation (BAC).

The aircraft built in United Kingdom by BAC were designated BAC 1-11.

In designation Rombac 1-11, Rom = Romania and bac = British Aircraft Corporation (BAC).

HR A fourth AeroAsia Rombac 1-11 aircraft (AP-BFC) is stored at Bucharest - Henri Coanda (Otopeni) (OTP / LROP) Airport in Romania.

Here's info about AP-BFC, interestingly it was the first Rombac 1-11 aircraft assembled in Romania under licence from British Aircraft Corporation (BAC). So this particular airframe may find place at some aviation museum in Romania because of its importance in Romanian aviation history.

All the three were leased out to Aero Asia hence the ownership of these aircrafts are with the lessor who quite clearly are not interested with these planes anymore and if these do not belong to Aero Asia how can CAA sieze these aircrats on basis that Aero Asia hasnt paid their dues.

Also quire interestingly these planes are not to old, infact almost as old as PIA 737's and I am sure that they have such lesser hours on them then PIA 737's

Probably AeroAsia purchased these aircraft from TAROM in late 1990s ? But even if these aircraft were on lease to AeroAsia, apparently it was AeroAsia who got these aircraft registered in Pakistan. So in one way or another AeroAsia was representative of these aircraft in Pakistan CAA records and I think that's why CAA notice is directed towards AeroAsia.

As far as I know, initially Rombac 1-11s were operated by AeroAsia in Pakistan under their Romanian registration from 1993 to 1995. In 1995 AeroAsia got four Rombac 1-11 aircraft registered in Pakistan.

Btw, does anyone know the exact reason why these Rombac 1-11s were grounded by AeroAsia ?

The AeroAsia Rombac 1-11s were flown by Romanian pilots and if I remember correctly, a newspaper article some years ago claimed that AeroAsia had to ground its Rombac 1-11s when Romanian pilots opted to obtain type rating for Boeing 737 to fly Boeing 737 with Tarom or some other airline. I think by that time Tarom also had phased out Rombac 1-11s from its fleet with induction/operation of western-built aircraft like Boeing 737.

The three AeroAsia Rombac 1-11s at Karachi Airport most likely will be scrapped/broken up. The Rombac and BAC 1-11s are out of commercial service in most parts of the world especially in the west due to aircraft's fuel cost/consumption and noise restrictions.

According to following advertisement given by Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) in today's (May 20) newspaper, three Bucuresti Rombac 1-11-561RC One-Eleven (AP-BFD, AP-BFE & AP-BFF) aircraft of Aero Asia parked at Jinnah International Air Port (JIAP) - Karachi will be auctioned on "As Is, Where Is" basis on June 20, 2014.

Aero Asia ground equipment including passenger stairs, steps, tug master, tractors, catering van, AC van, aircraft engine bark assembly will also be auctioned on "As Is, Where Is" basis on June 20, 2014, at Karachi Airport.

In this auction notice, aircraft registration AP-BED should be read as AP-BFD and aircraft registration AP-BEE should be read as AP-BFE.

According to corrigendum in today's (May 22) newspaper, the auction date for these three aircraft is June 19, 2014.

However, incorrect registration marks continue to appear as AP-BEE for AP-BFE and AP-BED for AP-BFD.

And now AP-BFF is also incorrectly mentioned as AP-BEF in this corrigendum.

Registration AP-BED was issued to a LET L-23 Super Blanik.
Registration AP-BEE was issued to a Bell 206L-3 LongRanger III.
Registration AP-BEF was issued to a Bell 412HP.

At least one AeroAsia Rombac 1-11 scrapped/broken up at Karachi Airport recently. Most likely her two sisterships also going to meet same fate or already have.

Slightly off-topic, but found this photograph of AP-BFC in Aero Asia colours published in a recent edition of Airliner World. The aircraft is stored at Henri Coanda International Airport in Romania. Apparently, this is aircraft is the first of only nine ROMBAC 1-11s built in Romania. It is intended to be preserved for permanent display at the airport, though not clear whether it will retain Aero Asia colours.
