Presently Lahore Airport terminal building has seven jet bridges and with addition of two jet bridges the total number of jet brides will increase to nine.

I think older seven jet bridges will be replaced with new design bridges when two new jet bridges get added with extended terminal building.

Other possibility is that two jet bridges, one from each end of terminal building, will be moved to extended part of the terminal building in case it's extended from both ends and in that case total number of jet bridges will remain seven.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in a ceremony held in Islamabad today said that under his government in late 1990s a bigger terminal building was planned for Lahore Airport. However, after the end of his government, the military government changed that plan and built smaller terminal building that experiences problems in handling three or more than three international flights at a time, he said.

Prime Minister suggested said that the existing terminal building should be expanded from its both sides/ends and a separate smaller terminal building should be constructed to handle domestic flights.

According to report in today's (May 14) "City42" newspaper, Lahore Airport expansion project will be completed in two years. The extended terminal building will use Mughal style of architecture of existing terminal building. The extended terminal building will also have jet bridges.

I heard about the actual design which was approved for lahore inernational airport. There were 12 bridges, 2 active runways, and airport was equivallent to Karachi airport. Blv me there was no sign of askari 10 society ;) too but as soon as govt was changed every plan went to scrap and now we are left with only tiny airport...

Seems following two options were discussed in meeting chaired by the prime minister today.

Option A - Expansion/extension of existing terminal building.

Option B - Construction of New Domestic Terminal building for domestic flights.

Image
Artist's impression of a new domestic terminal building with four jet bridges under Option B of Lahore Airport expansion project.

Image

Demerits of new domestic terminal building (Option B) - Site 2 include:

Parameters - Option B - Site 2 Across the Runway

Road Network

Land acquisition required (5 acres) for access.

Operational Risks
Towing of aircraft through two active runways.

Airport Operations
Split operations on both sides of the runway resulting in inconvenience of passengers.

Apron
Required.

Probably prime minister approved Option A i.e. expansion/extension of existing terminal building.

Option B, could be made realistic by linking the international terminal with the domestic.terminal through an underground section, instead of transporting passengers from buses and having to.cross the runway.

Or if they want to expand the existing facility, I think they should relocate the SAPS office that is right next to the terminal building, which would allow them decent space to expand the building.

Btw, a little off topic but does anyone know what the basement that is visible as you enter lhe airport through the parking, is for? Could that be utilised to create more space?

This was planned in the govt tenure before the govt was sacked by Military.....old stuff.
But things are changed now.. heard so many times that Lhe airport extension planned but never saw an inch moved. Infect runway upgradation and Cat 3b is also pending due to housing population near airport which is increased.

Somewhere I read that original terminal building design also included Mughal style white marble domes that were withdrawn from finally approved design as a cost-cutting measure.

Don't know whether it's true or not but I also heard that in the original design for people coming from areas like cantonment, gulberg, upper & lower mall etc. there was a short route underground access road crossing runways, apron, terminal building before emerging in the car park. The underground road was not opened or completed for general public use for security reasons. The closed entry/exit point for that underground road can be seen in airport's car park.
