MULTAN, Oct 28 (APP) -
Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani on Thursday said the commencement of Hajj flights from Multan by the present government has fulfilled the longstanding demand of the people of South Punjab. He was addressing the intending Hajjis of the maiden Hajj flight from Multan at a ceremony on the commencement of direct Hajj flights from Multan.

The Prime Minister said it was an important day for the people of Multan and South Punjab, as the commencement of direct Hajj flights from this historic city will greatly facilitate the people of this area in performing Hajj and Umra.

Gilani said the first Hajj flight was carrying 466 intending pilgrims, while this operation will continue till November 7 during which a total of 4735 intending Hajjis would be taken to the holy land by operating ten Hajj flights.

The Prime Minister said for this the first phase of expansion and up-gradation of Multan Airport was near completion, whereas after the completion of second phase, the operation of international flights would be initiated to facilitate the people of this region.

He said the commencement of international flights from Multan will not only help boost trade and economic activities in the area through air freight services but would also help promote tourism.

The Prime Minister said the operation of international flights from Multan will help the growers and traders of South Punjab to take their produce, particularly the fruit, to international market.

The Prime Minister said Multan being a historic city and also famed as a city of Sufis and saints, who always preached peace and harmony, attracts people from across the world.

The direct flights from Multan would help facilitate the international tourists to visit the area, he added.

The Prime Minister described the intending Hajjis as ambassadors of Pakistan in the holy lands of Makkah and Madina and urged them to pray for the country and nation during Hajj.

Minister for Defence Chaudhry Ahmad Mukhtar and Minister for Religious Affairs Syed Hamid Saeed Kazmi also addressed the ceremony, which was attended among others by a number of parliamentarians and notables of Multan.

Seems like there is confusion all around. CAA should at least update on what is completed and what is not. I was looking at the CAA website, and they dont have anything updated after 2007.

If anyone has information through any informal channels, please let us know with the accurate picture of where the Multan Airport's project stands.

The first phase of Multan International Airport upgradation project included extension of airport's runway to allow landing/take-off by widebody aircraft like Boeing 747 and Boeing 777. The inauguration of first non-stop Hajj flight from Multan to Jeddah with Boeing 747 indicates completion of work related to runway extension.

The second phase of Multan International Airport upgradation project includes construction of new passenger terminal building. Ground-breaking ceremony for the construction of new terminal building was held in In June 2010. The construction of new terminal building will be completed in two years.

So under the planned schedule, the second phase of Multan International Airport upgradation project will be completed by the end of year 2012 or start of year 2013.

Pakistan Television (PTV) in its 9:00PM new bulletin on November 1, 2010, showed PIA Boeing 747s operating pre-Hajj flights from Multan International Airport.

The news report included an old clip related to Multan International Airport upgradation project in which model of airport's new terminal building was seen. Here it is:

Two passenger boarding bridges can also be seen, I think at least four boarding bridges should be part of the new terminal building i.e. two boarding bridges for domestic flights and two for international flights. The new terminal building is being constructed under Phase-II of Multan International Airport upgradation project.

Here's November 1, 2010, Pakistan Television (PTV) news report about inauguration of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) Boeing 747 Hajj flights from Multan non-stop to Saudi Arabia. Multan is now one of seven airports in Pakistan from where PIA is operating direct Hajj flights to Saudi Arabia. The other six airports from where direct Hajj flights to Saudi Arabia are operated are Islamabad, Karachi, Lahore, Peshawar, Quetta and Sialkot.

I must let you know that 23 years ago I flew AP-BAA Boeing 707 with Capt. Aftab Zia from Karachi to Multan to Lahore by PK332 in March 1987. Yes PIA Boeing 707, 720B could land & take off Multan but AP-AXG & AP-BBK B707 Cargo last flight to Multan was in 1999.
