It is wise decision to shut down the station temporarily, stop-over in MAN is a big turn-off for pax. Unless USA allows direct flight from Pakistan, why would pax choose PIA over other 1-stop airlines.

In 2008 PIA had a good fleet enough to operate to a lot of stations in Europe, UK Norht America and Far East.

During 2008-13 the most corrupt government in the history of Pakistan took control and the operational fleet went down to like 19 aircraft.

With the shrinkage the network shrank and with that each station became more expensive to maintain.

The staff stayed at 19000 strong.

Then comes Nura League and the airline starts looking presentable but still not able to stand on its two feet.

PIA has inducted 3 777s in the last nine years and look at the fleet it grounded. 12 A310s 6 747s. 18 long haul planes went and 3 came in.

7 737s go and 12 A320s come in, so even the A310 was replaced by an aircraft with 50 seats less.

Sorry state for an airline with now billions of dollars in debt and no equity .

What is the solution.

Investment. Who will invest???????????????????????????? Good question.

PIA to Suspend Loss-making New York Service - Mehtab Abbasi

Adviser to the Prime Minister on Aviation Sardar Mehtab Ahmed Khan Abbasi in a press conference arranged at Islamabad Airport today said that PIA is going to suspend New York service.

The airline on its New York route was suffering loss of around two billion rupees annually since past ten years, he said.

PIA may consider resuming New York flights with upgraded aircraft in future.

According to DAWN News channel:

PIA is ending New York flights from January 1, 2018.

Initially, the airline's twice-a-week flights operated every Wednesday and Saturday for New York will be reduced to once-a-week flight from October 17, 2017. The once-a-week service will be operated every Saturday.

With all the fixed expenditure coupled with non-utilization of crew, the advisor in his wisdom chose to operate one flight a week to JFK between Oct 17 and Dec 31
No further bookings on this route are being entertained so lots of these once a week flights will have poor loads.
In order to arrest financial drain would it not have been better to suspend these flights with immediate effect and transfer passengers to other carriers?

PIA have agreement with many service providers till end of this year, for e.g. Hotel for crew, ground handling, pax handling services, e.t.c. So by doing once weekly PIA is just making to that mark. Other wise PIA have to pay to them any way, so money will not be saved.

Currently New York is not in the list of destinations in PIA codeshare agreements.

Abbas
How this code sharing works, from PIA's site these cities are not even listed to make a reservation.

Best option for PIA is to codeshare with Air Canada for NY, LA, HU and BOS. & Inc flights to torronto to atleast 10 weekly . With planned new cabins and competitive pricing, PIA/AC flights can be equally attractive to pax.
Similarly for flights to northern and southern europe where demand exists but not enough to fill 777s, considering the central location of Germany in Europe, a codeshare with Lufthansa can work better than Turkish IMO.
