In 2002 due closure of Indian Airspace PIA flights to Far East were routed through China. As things stand the closure is likely to continue for long period, hence to mitigate the sufferings of Pakistani community residing in Malaysia the Kuala Lumpur operation be restored via China.

Thai simply need to reroute their flights so that they are not entering into Pak from Indian Airspace. Similar to how the Malaysian PM came to Pak last week, the plane flew in Indian Airspace, then went across the water and up into the western part of Pakistan. It will add approx. 1.5hrs to travel time in each direction - much better then cancelling routes. But given TG don't like their crew to stay over-night in Pak (no foreign airline does) this could be the reason behind the decision - because a flight time usually of 5hrs (plus ground time) means a 12hr round trip, with an extra 2-3hrs, this puts them over crew allowance.

That may not be as straightforward as it sounds. The very high terrain along that route probably requires a larger than usual emergency oxygen supply in case of depressurisation.

According to news sources:

Malindo Air has suspended its flights between Kuala Lumpur and Lahore till May 24. PIA flights on this route are also suspended.

Passengers paying higher fares for travel to/from Kuala Lumpur through gulf carriers.

The flight time will be approximately 10 to 11 hrs not at all feasible
